Free Boat Rides Were the
Hot Ticket at the Seattle Boat Show
Free sailboat rides at the Seattle Boat Show at
Shilshole Bay Marina put 170 people new to sailing on
the water. NMTA got Discover Sailing the TV and press
coverage that piqued people’s interest. They also sent
out invitations to potential sailors that had responded
to a story aired on KCPQ Channel 13, inviting people
to try sailing. The response was excellent, with over 200
sending in RSVPs and about 130 showed up to preview
the boat show on Wednesday night. And a big thanks to
Stacey Hoopes and Fisheries Supply for the donation of
children’s lifejackets.
When the show opened there was one boat scheduled
for rides Thursday and Friday, with two on Saturday.
Boats and skippers were being provided by Windworks
and Seattle Sailing Club. It soon became obvious to
the 48° North crew, who manned the Discovery Sailing
booth, that the promotion of Discover Sailing had been
done right and we needed more boats. Thursday was
booked solid in the first couple of hours and we were
turning away more people than we were able to get on the
water.
By Friday we were able to double the number of boats
scheduled with Admiralty Yachts adding a boat for Friday
through Sunday and Marine Servicenter adding a boat for
Saturday skippered by Elliott Bay Yacht Sales. Even with
double the capacity we still ended up turning a number of
people away.
Most of the new sailors we had talked with were
looking to try sailing before making the plunge into boating.
Comments from skippers had one person getting off the
boat determined to walk up the dock and join one of the
sailing clubs. Another family had come to the show to buy
a powerboat, but after seeing how the entire family was
able to work together on a sailboat, they were rethinking
their decision. Another report claims one person walked
off his Discover Sailing 90 minute introduction to sailing to
purchase a boat on display at the show.
The Discover Sailing Booth will again be offering
sailboat rides at the Lake Union Boats Afloat Show, so
anyone interested in trying out sailing, welcome aboard!
