Rock Warning in Echo Bay
Enjoy the glamour
Following are my comments as submitted on the
NOAA chart discrepancy form available online. This
of sailing at the 33rd
information should be made available to the boating public.
Wooden Boat Festival
The “indicated date and time” was August 2, 2009 at 09:35.
The soundings were at 48 45 35.75 N and 122 54 10 W. Chart
in Port Townsend!
number 18431.
“A rock, or small ridge, is present where none is
indicated on the chart. Several soundings using a sonar
fish finder and hand held GPS were taken at the indicated
date and time and returned depths of only 6 to 7 feet.
Predicted tide levels were approximately -0.35 feet at the
time. These soundings were on the 2 fathom line shown on
Kristen Belt sailing
the chart. The chart indicates a least depth of 1 fathom, 5

feet between the ridge and the nearest obvious obstruction,
“Scirocconull
the islet north and west of South Finger Island. On May 19,
2008 around 12:00 my vessel with a draft of 6’8” sustained
significant damage when it struck the ridge. Tide levels
were approximately -1.4 feet at that time. Discussions with
several different boaters revealed stories of other vessels
360.385.6330
hitting this uncharted rock. There are large numbers of
recreational boaters that frequent the area, many of them

sailboats with deeper drafts.”
