Dean Stockings (41) developed a remarkably
effective‘shockandawe’strategywithsomeof
his earlier imagery – much of it focused on the gay
market.
Now this self-taught shooter claims he is veering less
towardstheoutrightshockandmoretowardstheawe. Or
the‘wow’.
Inspired by the work of
surrealist photographer
David LaChappelle;
Robert Mapplethorpe
(famous for his pictures
of gay and sado-
masochistic sex) and
James Bidgood for his
fantasticaldepictionsof
erotica,Deanhasbuilta
reputation as a pre-
eminent photographer
working in the UK gay
community.
HeworksextensivelywithtitleslikeGayNation,reFresh,
BOYZ and Gscene – and showcases a variety of nude
andsemi-nude(andinsomeeyes,sacrilegious)images
onhiswebsite,withaccompanyingtitlessuchas‘Satan’s
ButterflyBall’.
But on the same site he also displays portraits of the
singerToyahWillcox(withwhomheworksconsistently)
andvariousfemalemodels.Andtocompletetheeclectic
commercialmix,hisBiggerPixeloffshoothandlesgrowing
numbers of traditional and civil ceremony wedding
commissions.
