14 — Good News, etc. — February 2012 nc/sd evangelism

By RICK MONROE The dream is almost complete. Skyline

Church finally will be moving into its new 2,000-seat worship center on Sunday, Feb. 26. Official dedication services in March will feature visits by Dr. James Dobson and C. Peter Wagner. The journey — which Pastor Jim Garlow

calls “America’s Most Difficult Church Relocation” — began years before Garlow moved here from Texas in late 1995. Skyline was in Lemon Grove at that time,

but wanted to build on 125 acres of land in the eastern part of La Mesa at Campo Road and Jamacha Boulevard in the Rancho San Diego area. Finally, on Palm Sunday, 2000, Skyline

realized a 19-year vision of relocating to “The Mountain.” Not only was this a lengthy endeavor, it was also a costly one. Nearly $27 million was spent constructing a $6 million building due to environmental, topographical and bureaucratic challenges. The church also had to designate 100 acres as open space. Also, the complex that opened in 2000

was not a full build-out. Worship services were held in a family room that seated 800 people comfortably, up to 900 when it was packed. Now, a dozen years later — after more

red tape and at a price tag Garlow didn’t wish to disclose — the church will be able to fit comfortably into two Sunday services, at 9 and 11 a.m. “I’m very proud of our people,” Garlow commented during a tour of the building on Jan. 23. “They were very resilient and didn’t waver in the commitment to reach our area.” The pastor pointed out many symbolic measurements and features in the theater- style building and surrounding land. Many of the projects were still being worked on, but most will be ready by late February, in time for March ceremonies. In front of the building is the Heritage

Walk, designed by Garlow, featuring tiles with the names of 318 key figures from biblical and church history. Also, in the front is the Revelation Fountain and baptismal designed by Dan Grant, the executive pastor. On the outside of the building are marble

slabs, one saying “Jesus is the Cornerstone” with Scripture references and the other listing characteristics of Jesus. The marble, from India, was etched in China. Also on the grounds are rocks dug from

the property with Scripture written on them. The property will be irrigated from an 800-foot well. In the back is a trail to an area called Prayer Point, where people can look down on the buildings and property to pray.

Entering the building, you see two giant

40-foot pillars — named Boaz (“in Him is strength” from 1 Kings 7:21, 2 Chronicles 3:17) and Jachin (“He establishes” from 1 Kings 7:21, 2 Chronicles 3:17) — in the expansive atrium. Above are 14 stained glass windows, seven on each side, with back-lighting, showing the life of Jesus. To the left is an entry to the Pastor Butcher Chapel, named for the first pastor of the church, Dr. Orval Butcher, who served the church from 1954 to 1981. To the side is a life-size bust statue of the founder, who died last year. John Maxwell served as the second

pastor from 1981 to 1995 before leaving to pursue an international speaking and writing career as an expert in leadership. Garlow is the third pastor in the church’s 58-year history. Next to Pastor Butcher Chapel is a bell

tower with 12 various sized bells collected from churches across the U.S. On the other side of the center atrium

is a café and study room. Beyond the two pillars in the auditorium entrance is a spectacular rock wall. This feature, inspired by Jerusalem’s “Wailing Wall,” is the Carol Garlow Healing Wall. Its many stones com- memorate and celebrate all the health and wholeness that come from being a part of God’s church community. The wall is named after Garlow’s wife,

who has been fervently committed to pray for people needing healing for the past 25 years, as well as training up intercessors and healing teams. Moreover, Carol undoubtedly has

inspired Skyliners and countless others around the world by her strength, persever- ance and faith during her 4-½ year cancer journey. The cancer has come back four times in four years. Several weeks ago, 1/3 of her liver, containing six tumors, was

removed. She is continuing chemo again. Jim and Carol Garlow placed the first

stone, the cornerstone, for the project on Christmas Day. There will be small kiosks at which people can write prayers, fold the paper, and — like Jerusalem’s “Wailing Wall” — push the paper between the stones. Intercessors later pray for the needs. The building includes much meaning

and symbolism, but is also very practical. The auditorium seating is arranged like a half-bowl, with the outside seating elevated and angled toward the center. The seating is for 2,000, but could be expanded to 2,500 by adding a mezzanine area. Hamman Construction of El Cajon is building the 58,700 square foot building. Part of the construction project is a gymna- sium with a basketball court and exercise equipment, offices and other amenities. The old family center is being converted

to a junior high and high school facility, including an indoor skate park. Key upcoming dates: • Saturday, Feb. 25, 6 p.m., 77 teams of

people will each read sections of the Bible, so the entire Bible is read aloud in one hour. Then at 7 p.m. is a time of prayer. • Sunday, Feb. 26, 9 and 11 a.m., first services in auditorium. • Sunday, March 4, 9 and 11 a.m., C.

excited to see the men who were trans- formed 20 years ago bring their sons, to pass on what it means to be a godly man to the next generation. To attract a younger crowd, Washington

said he is lining up a younger speaking group.

Confirmed speakers in San Diego include

Greg Stier, Tony Evans, Samuel Rodriguez and himself. Tentative speakers are Bob Beltz and Steve Farrar. “We’ll have appropriate music, an artist

they will appreciate, but it’s not finalized yet,” Washington said. Jeremy Camp is one of the artists PK often uses. Washington returned to Promise Keep-

ers in 2008, the same year founder Coach Bill McCartney rejoined the organization as chairman of the board. McCartney is active in the organization,

but has curtailed his speaking at confer- ences so he can take care of his ill wife. Prior to the San Diego conference, PK

will have events in Orlando, Florida; Cedar Falls, Iowa; Garland, Texas, and Cleveland, Ohio. For more information, visit www.prom- isekeepers.org.
