STUDENTS RESPOND: ‘What has been most rewarding in your pursuit of higher education?’

San Diego

Christian College By Brent Oglesby I am in my third

year of school here at SDCC, and I have been extremely blessed to be here. I attended public schools prior to col- lege and I can say without a doubt that one of the most rewarding pieces for me in being at SDCC is the relationships that I have developed with my professors. I had always heard stories of colleges where you don’t have interaction with your profes- sors, but that has never been the case here. It’s amazing to be invited to lunch just to talk with my professors about school and

life and to see that they care for me. During the beginning of this school year

I was doing many things that took up a majority of my time: Internship at Shadow Mountain Community Church, coaching high school volleyball at Christian High, working on-campus in the Student Life offi ce, and playing soccer for the college. During that time I was extremely stressed and would just need someone to listen and offer advice. One of my professors would take me to lunch weekly; he could encour- age me and mentor me in all the different areas in which I was serving. It is because of these types of daily conversations with my professors that my higher education experience is enjoyable; they impact my life spiritually, socially and

academically. They truly care! ❏

It was through her involvement that she “encountered Jesus” and joined the servant team the very next semester. Those involved with InterVarsity want

to approach students like Melissa, who have no familiarity with Christianity, in the places where they are most comfortable. That is why all of their events take place on campus – in the dorms, classrooms, and gathering spaces — alongside the other campus clubs and organizations. InterVarsity at CSUSM also is active

within Greek life and regularly serves migrant workers in San Diego. A weekly outreach-oriented worship gathering brings together students from CSUSM, Mesa Community College, and Palomar Community College. In San Diego County, InterVarsity is also present at UCSD, SDSU, and USD. This past year, InterVarsity at CSUSM enjoyed a record year in attendance, fi rst- time decisions to faith, and recommitments.

And their goals for this next year are both quantitatively and qualitatively higher. “Although it’s not about the math, we

want to empower students to reach their friends for Christ,” said True. “Without the fi nancial support of indi- viduals in the San Diego community the work that we do would be impossible,” said Marchena. “As we seek to reach the 50,000 college students [in North County] between these three campuses (CSUSM, Mesa Com- munity College, and Palomar Community College), we need two things: To have fully funded staff workers on campus so that the ministry can run at full capacity on campus and to have the surrounding community in North County commit to praying for these campuses.” People like True and organizations like

InterVarsity are making their mark and having an impact. To learn more about supporting Inter-

Here are the fi rst steps to becoming a Christ-follower aka a Christian, a Believer, or being born-again:

1. Admit I am a sinner and need God. 2. Believe that Jesus died for your sins and was raised to life three days later.

3. Confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord.

This Salvation Prayer is merely a means to confess your faith and belief in Jesus Christ:

“God, I recognize that I have not lived my life for You. I have been living for myself. I need and want You as Lord of my life. I acknowledge the completed work of Your Son Jesus Christ in giving His life for me on the cross at Calvary. I repent of my sins and ask for your forgiveness. I give you the steering wheel of my life and ask that You come into my heart. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Welcome to God’s family! Now, as a way to grow closer to Him you are encouraged to fi nd a local Bible-believing church to at end. Daily read the Word of God to grow in your relationship with Jesus.

If you have prayed this prayer, let us know and we can help direct you to a local church in your area. Call Good News, etc. at 760-724-3075.
