Songwriter has vision for worship The

W

ith the year still new before us, the time for reflection must make room for renewed and revital-

ized convictions for godly living today and tomorrow. This is assuredly true regard- ing the topic of worship. Young Nathan Keating is a deep thinking, yet proactive Christian songwriter, recording artist and worship leader living in San Diego. His home church has been Emmanuel Faith Community in Escondido, where he was on staff and led worship. But, music is only one of his tools. Comments from a recent interview offer worthwhile insights for those desiring to fit more and more snugly in Jesus’ lap and have greater impact this year: Do you have a vision for united praise and worship for His church? “I believe this must be broken down

into the two components of musical and non-musical worship. First, non-musical worship is the majority of what takes place as we follow Christ. “In our culture worship means music,

but biblically this not the case. Rather, it is the action and behavior obedient to God. If we are to truly worship Christ as His (collective) body, we must break down our walls built in pride, and work together. Our differences can unite us and make us stronger. Just as the Spirit gives a variety of equally valuable and vital gifts to individuals, each culture and tradition also holds expressions, insights, and practices that are equally valuable and vital in order for the body of Christ to func- tion as He intended. Unity is part of worship. “As far as musical worship, some of the

most moving worship experiences I have ever encountered have been when I have witnessed brothers and sisters lifting their hearts to God in a manner different from my own. It is amazing to consider how He would hear and take joy in every culture and tradition, praising His name in their own unique, heart-felt way. I understand God in a different and richer way when I can step out of my own ‘worship box’ and truly hear the hearts of others praising God. We should pay attention to what we share in common: coming to the throne of God with all that we are and all that we have, then laying it at the feet of our Savior as an act of holy, pure, united worship.” Nathan Keating is an accomplished musician and songwriter. His path to in- timacy with Christ was not an easy one, but perhaps the challenges were the very

elements that enriched him and propelled him forward. After his father died from a drug overdose when Keating was 9, he turned to the world for fulfillment, but all was fleeting and vain. As he writes in his Facebook bio, “I became immensely hungry and increasingly thirsty for life, but the food I ate and the water I drank left me hopeless.” Due to financial and familial hardship, Nathan taught himself to play the guitar, piano, bass, drums, and to sing. But what he lacked in finances, he made up for with God-given ability. Merely three months into practicing, he was already leading worship and writing songs. Nathan, do you have any words for today’s musicians? “Exude excellence that stems forth from

a worshipful heart. You can have the tasti- est licks and the baddest chops around, but if it is not for Christ, it is all for naught. I often times tell musicians during my workshops that if they want to be a rock star, in the sense of seeking self glorification, then go be a rock star, but the musical worship team is not a place for you at this time. This may sound harsh, but I only say this because this was some- thing I’ve had to address in my own life.”

Nathan Keating’s experiences in “big

time” musical environments helped tem- per him into the “instrument” he is today. During the summer of 2009, Nathan ven- tured to Nashville to intern for Wildwood Studios and seek out writing opportunities. By the end of the summer, he had written “Bless the Lord” with Geron Davis, and “Trust in You” with Evan Milby — a song that will be used as the single for Evan’s debut album. Nathan, what’s the new year hold for

you? “I am immensely excited about this new

year because I know God has a magnifi- cent plan for me as I follow His leading and seek His will. I have had a great start to my career here in Southern California with my debut album Here Goes Everything up and running, but I have felt for a while Please turn to next page
