Death and Transfiguration. Gerhard Markson’s Strauss recordings with
the RTÉ NSO have been critically acclaimed. Opening tonight’s concert,
the Oboe Concerto composed in the late evening of Strauss’ life. And in a
fitting climax to the season, and to Markson’s role as Principal Conductor,
Mahler’s powerful drama of death and resurrection. This is music on a
grand scale, with one of the most breathtaking and moving endings in all
of music.

will, for this recital, perform the Chopin/Godowsky Études notorious for
being technically difficult and, therefore, are rarely played, unless the
pianist is a super-virtuoso like Boris Berezovsky.

This year, the orchestra, who are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the
death of the great Czech composer Antonin Dvorák, will perfˇ orm his ninth
and final Symphony. Guest soloist Nikolai Demidenko, whose passionate
pianism ensures he is in demand worldwide, will reveal his true talents in
Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1, a romantic work, known to music lovers
worldwide for its enchanting second movement.
