TPi AWARDS 2009: The Production

have liked. In the end we simply made the best of it
on the day. We placed the lasers on the balcony at
the far end of the room and did an aerial show above
the audience in the lead up to the start of the award
ceremony.”
The final piece to be added to the stage design was
not so much a lectern as something “looking like it
belongs on the flight deck of the Starship Enterprise!”,
according to Phill Jupitus.
It was, in fact, the LiteConsole from LiteStructures,
an aluminium product that originates from a design
commissioned last year by DJ/producer Paul Oakenfold
for his support spots on Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet
world tour.
Thanks to LiteStructures associate Nick McGeachin,
who suggested we use it, the eye-catching, modular
LiteConsole was specially branded for us by the
Wakefield company, and fitted with a front plasma
panel from XL and a pair of autocue screens by James
Hamling, who ran the whole autocue system.
We were grateful for Blackout’s assistance for yet
another year. With Tim Searle leading a crew of three,
the company provided a large amount of black drape
that was used to mask the rear of the stage and provide
truss borders.
Draping was increased this year to ensure that
the show control area was completely concealed,
with further pipe and drape around the balcony and
handrails.
AUDIO
For many of our rental company and manufacturer
suppliers, the TPi Awards is an exciting challenge,
providing an opportunity to showcase expertise and
new products in front of a highly critical audience.
Chris Headlam, the MD of Orbital, whose Event
Communications division supplied crew and audio
equipment, clearly relishes the challenge. He said:
