NEWS FOCUS: Red Square Audio
Below: Paul Nicholson with Toyah during set-up; Tim Gray of Tannoy, Nicholson & InnovaSon’s Xavier Pion. Inset: Eclipse product manager Hervé de Caro.
For Tannoy, the second addition to the
Red Square stable, the event marked the
introduction of the VQ Live series of point
source powered loudspeakers, the Scottish-
headquartered manufacturer’s first foray into
the live/touring market.
Based on the existing VQ installation range,
the VQ Live is a close collaboration between
Tannoy and Nicholson, who consulted with
the engineering team in adapting the range
for the live environment, and who now takes
responsibility as exclusive distributor for the
range in the UK and ROI.
Due to be officially launched at
ProLight+Sound in Frankfurt during April, the
VQ Live 60 top box is a three-way Class-D
powered design with DSP and VNET network
topology which incorporates a Dual Concentric
compression driver loaded into a single PSW
waveguide, plus dual 12” semi-horn loaded
woofers. This is joined by the VNET Live 218DR,
a powered dual 18” direct radiating subwoofer.
At Pinewood, a single 60 and 218DR per side
certainly seemed to fit the bill and according to
Tannoy’s Tim Gray, the product not only brings
a legendary name into the marketplace — “we
are the only loudspeaker company listed in the
dictionary,” he joked — but also offers other
benefits.
“After years of ‘me-too’ line array boxes, the
VQ offers sonic superiority, less boxes required,
lower costs; and also incorporates full VNET
network topology. It has the potential to be a
true line array killer,” said Gray.
And certainly for the guests at the launch,
the combination of Toyah in a moulded bustier,
great sound and great technology seemed to
be a winning one. Possibly ‘A View To A Kill’ for
Red Square Audio it seems.
