IPTV in focus
IPTV: Playing its part

The IPTV market globally is continuing to expand and evolve at
breakneck speed. But it’s no longer the straightforward proposition
we once thought it would be. As the IPTV market continues to
broadcast
mature, thoughts turn to its evolution rather than just its deployment.
Whilst producing the most recent issue of IBE’s sister electronic
publication - ‘IPTV in Focus’ - I interviewed Steve Oetegenn, COO of
Verimatrix.
Asked about future global models for the IPTV market, he said: “I
do not think we will be talking about IPTV as an independent solution
in five year’s time; the future may see the focus on IPTV as an
independent solution diminish, as hybrid systems are developed to
involve both traditional linear broadcasting and delivery via IPTV to
supplement the package with those additional interactive services
that give the consumer what they want. We expect to see IPTV
simply become part of an overall converged digital television
service.”
So have all our efforts to differentiate between IPTV and Internet TV,
satellite and cable been in vain? And does the consumer care how he
or she receives content, as long as it meets quality and content
1051 triax
demands? Oetegenn continued: “Consumers never have, and never
will, make a purchasing decision based on a particular technology.
g51
SD/HD signal compliant
What matters to them is what the product or service can do to
g51
OB, Studio and Stadium
improve their lives. Therefore, consumers will be pointed towards the
g51 Fast assembly
interactive and personalisation capabilities IP-based pay-TV can offer
and they will make their decision based on whether or not that type
g51
Easy installation
of service appeals to them. I think it’s likely, however, that instead of
g51
Field maintenance friendly
IPTV continuing as a standalone TV delivery technology, we’ll see more
g51
Integrated cable bend relief
of the traditional platforms (satellite and cable for example) adopting
a two-way network approach to enhance the services they offer.”
g51
High strength and rugged
There is little doubt that the market potential for IPTV services
g51
Watertight IP68 (2m/24h)
around the world is huge. The technology to deliver personal, secure
g51
Gender reversible
television services via IP networks exists and is being refined every
day – all that remains is to develop a sustainable model for the
g51
Improved RF performance
expansion of the service. As Steve Oetegenn suggests, customers are
g51
Integrated connector and
not interested in the detail, just the result. Predictions concerning the cable assembly solutions
number of IPTV subscribers continue to escalate - as technology
boundaries continue to blur they will still be there, just harder to spot!
