BURNSKI
LEEDS-BASED JAMES BURNHAM — AKA
BURNSKI — is one of the most promising tech
talents to emerge from the UK’s fertile dance
scene in recent years. Since garnering a residency
at Leed’s Back2Basics at the tender age of 20,
he’s gone on to regularly rock key clubs like
Fabric, Sankeys and Berlin’s hip Watergate.
But it’s the funky tech house productions he’s
clocked up on Dessous, Trapez, Infant and 2020

Vision that seem to be getting the most attention.
Drawing on his classical piano training and love of
all kinds of music, from dub to disco, minimal to
jazz, Burnham’s unique twist on the club rocking
formula means his tracks slip effortlessly into the
sets of all kinds of DJs and he’s only set to up the

ante further in 2009.
DJmag linked up with the Northern tech wizard to
learn a little more…

With your piano training background, do
you feel that melody and musicality are
important in dance music?
“Yeah defi nitely, in my music it’s becoming a lot
6
more important. Nowadays it’s becoming really
melodic. I never used to write music with much
melody, it was all about drums and grooves, but
now I’m heading in that direction.
“Playing piano I’ve always been into melodies,
it defi nitely does help. If I come up with a tune
in my head, I can play it straight away on the
keyboard. The music that I’ve been writing the
last couple of months, that’s gonna be out soon,
I’m really, really happy with. That’s where I’m at
musically, there’s just a bit more feeling in there.”
How does your DJ style compare to the
tracks you produce?
“I think I play house and techno and what I pro-
duce is a mixture of these styles too, so it’s quite
similar, really. I play a lot of my own stuff and also
a decent amout of unreleased stuff. Nowadays, I
play about 50% of my own tracks.”
You’ve played all across Europe but where’s
your favourite club and why?
“My favourite club is Watergate. It’s an amazing
club, both rooms are really great and it’s a good
vibe. It’s just next level really, you get goose-
bumps when you walk in! It’s just one of those
amazing venues to be in. “
What have you got coming up release-
wise?
“I’ve just done a track for Poker Flat, it’s gonna
be on a double vinyl pack to celebrate their 100th
release — they’ve put together a good bunch of
tracks. There’s another few bits and bobs that
are to come from me. I was gonna do an album
but I’m not 100% sure at the moment, there’s a
couple more EPs in me fi rst. I think I just need to
build a bigger reputation before I do the album.”
