winners through the MOA Foundation. Alice noted that the process was a bit rough to start, but after contacting the Founda- tion, it was a very straightforward process to apply for the Paul B. Scholarship. The Foundation paid the fees directly to BMW SEM, easing a bit of the financial impact on the Dearborn cou- ple, as the trip to Grattan is best cou- pled with a sleep-over so as to be fresh for the event. Alice and Chris were preparing for a trip

to the Blue Ridge Parkway and wanted to expand their skills. Prior to purchasing the new R, Alice rode an F 650 GS twin like Chris’s. Both have been riding curvy roads for a while, but Alice was concerned about the length of their upcoming BRP trip. With the MOA Foundation backing them,

the track day was the perfect way to learn the limits of the new bike and rider combi- nation quickly and safely, as well as an effec- tive way to bond with her new motorcycle before the trip.

“I really trust my bike now,” said Alice. “I

had no idea what it was capable of. I mean, I know that it's a capable bike, but now I have a whole new level of understanding of how far I can push it when I need to. I have a new level of understanding of what I can do now.” The opportunity to explore not only the bike's range was important to her,

but she preferred an environment that focused on smoothness and skill rather than outright speed. A high point was learning to roll on the throttle and discover- ing how staying on the gas can smooth out a curve that other- wise would have not gone well. “It's a chal- lenging track, so there are many ways to push myself. Each corner is another chance to explore the bike. We might have to do this

again!”

grinned Alice. Chris nodded enthusiasti- cally and noted that he's been with his bike for a while now, and he also gained confi- dence and reached a comfort level that he didn't previously have. “I'm more ready for this trip. I am going to be able to take all of this to the road to improve as a rider in general.”

Audrey said, “It was exciting to be recognized by BMW for my riding skill and to get on track with Keith Code and the RR before anyone else. The superbike that had been missing from the BMW lineup was finally here, in my hands and was everything I'd hoped for.”
