NATIONAL SKATING MONTH

Troy SC, Troy, Ohio We held our “It’s Great to Skate” event on

Jan. 9. We had two tables set up with four reg- istration points — and we never stopped regis- tering skaters. We had 353 people attend. Tere were lessons given throughout the day and we gave away all the goodies in the NSM kit, as well as two six-week sessions for Snowplow Sam, Ba- sic Skills or hockey skills, four 30-minute private lessons (donated by some of our coaches), Troy Skating Club T-shirts and Troy Skating Club wa- ter bottles. It was the biggest turnout we have ever had and we were thrilled that it was mostly fam- ilies. Next year we are going to have to do more than one session. Te Hobart Arena donated the 90 minutes of ice and only charged $1 for skate rental.

Hershey FSC, Hershey, Pennsylvania

Hershey FSC hosted three events as an op-

portunity to demonstrate a commitment to com- munity service. It decided to take its annual com- munity skate with Coco the Bear — the Hershey AHL hockey team’s mascot — to a new level. Te community skate was held as a free event with one catch: Attendees were asked to bring canned goods for the Hershey Food Bank. Te club is happy to report that 474 pounds of canned goods were collected. Te day continued with a send- off party for two of HFSC members headed to the U.S. Championships. Indoor s’mores and an evening of well-wishes and bonding with friends rounded out the day. Hershey FSC capped off its celebrations with a “Skate and Paint” experi- ence. After an hour of skating with friends, club members flexed a different type of artistic muscle.

A local company came to the rink with a special skate design created just for HFSC skaters and family to paint. Members enjoyed skating with their friends, dinner and creating a memorable keepsake.

Santa Fe SC Santa Fe, New Mexico

We offered our “It’s Great to Skate Day” on

Jan. 9. While a snowstorm deterred some, we had approximately 100 skaters partake in free 20-min- ute lessons, U.S. Figure Skating goodies and con- sultations with our in-house coaches. Immedi- ately after, most went on to sign up for our first week of learn-to-skate classes. Jan. 9 was officially proclaimed “It’s Great to Skate Day” in Santa Fe by the Mayor Javier Gonzales.
