Right of way practices pay off Right-of-Way/Fleet Coordinator - Paul Epperly
In 2014 our spray crews covered most of Kay County. We are on a four-year cycle when it comes to spraying right-of-ways. In 2015, we will wrap up Kay County and move into Osage County. By us be- ing more aggressive with our spraying we are being more efficient with our operations. For example, we covered the same amount of area in 2000 and used one-third fewer chemicals. Therefore, when we spray the trees at an early age, we use fewer chemicals. As a result of this practice, trees are not in our lines and your power is less likely to be interrupted. We have expanded our tree 1144503
crew this year with a retired line truck, yet new to us, and two new employees with one being fulltime. The two new employees are Trey Tieman and Dakota Hagan. By adding the smaller bucket truck and one full time position we are able to split the tree crew up and have two trucks cutting and one truck between the two to chip. In Oct. 2010 we started in the northwest corner of our system and worked our way across the interstate then south to Perry and back up on the east side of interstate. I am glad
to report as of Oct. 31st, we completely covered our system and are starting over. by and remedy the situation. In working to keep a safe and reliable supply of power flowing to your home or busi- ness, we need your help. Let us know if you notice trees or branches that might pose a risk to our power lines. Even
more important, before planting trees in your yard, think about how tall they may grow and how wide their branches may spread. As a rule of thumb, 25 feet of ground-to-sky clearance should be available on each side of our utility poles to give power lines plenty of space. Choose tree varieties with care and plant with power lines in mind.
Our right-of-way practice is adamant on getting to the prob- lem before it becomes a prob- lem. Thus, it’s very rare for an outage to be caused by a tree limb and we like it that way!
