In the summer of 2014, a storm took out more than 600 poles and nearly half the cooperative’s system lost power at the height of the storm.


Disasters, whether caused by nature, accidents or hostile acts, exact an enormous cost, both in economic and human terms. Electric cooperatives, like TCEC, have a unique and effective approach to emergency management and disaster recovery: mutual assistance. Following a disaster, co-ops will rapidly deploy support staff and equipment to emergency and recovery zones to assist sister electric cooperatives.


Because the national network of transmission and distribution infrastructure owned by electric cooperatives has been built to federal standards, crews from any co-op in America can arrive on the scene ready to provide emergency support, secure in their knowledge of the system’s engineering.


We work closely with other first responders, state and local government and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to ensure an effective and coordinated response in the event of an emergency.


Following a disaster, we learn how to protect our systems better. And we become more resilient. When it comes to resiliency, we have a good story to tell. We serve our member-consumers in the most rugged, remote terrain in the country. And we have learned how to restore power in extremely difficult circumstances. While we can’t predict what Mother Nature has in store for us, I believe these lessons will help us the next time disaster strikes. n

TCEC will be closed on Wednesday, Dec. 24, and Thursday, Dec. 25, for the Christmas holiday. It will also be closed Thursday, Jan. 1, for the New Year’s Day holiday.


The after-hours service will be handling payments and outage reporting. TCEC’s employees will also be on-call.

TCEC wins top award in state communications contest

CEC employees JuliAnn Graham, communications coordinator, and Leslie Kraich, community and member


relations coordinator, recently attended OKL University, an editor’s workshop hosted by the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives (OAEC), which publishes “Oklahoma Living” magazine. During the OKL Awards banquet on Nov. 6, the TCEC communications team was presented with three awards. Graham and Kraich accepted the awards on behalf of TCEC.


OAEC’s CEO Chris Meyers presented TCEC with the award for “Top Rural Electric Communicator of 2014.” Tis prestigious award was given based on submitted materials and the cooperative’s overall communications efforts. In addition to recognition during OAEC’s 2015 Annual Meeting in April, TCEC will be featured in a video produced by OAEC and will receive a paid communications conference registration.


Te cooperative also received awards for its website, www.tcec.coop, and its Member Matters video series, available on TCEC’s YouTube channel.


Graham was also presented with an OKIES award for the cover story on unique runs in OKL magazine’s July 2014 issue. n
