Executive Director’s Letter by Joe Huston

Building a Brighter Future for Golf

G

olf creates many strong feelings and emotions that few other activities can replicate. There is the “shot euphoria” of a well

struck iron, the exciting sound of a ball falling into the hole and the adrenaline rush of winning a friendly wager. However, there is another great

emotion that all NCGA members should feel, and that is a strong sense of pride for what the NCGA is doing through Youth on Course (YOC). The NCGA offers much more than just handicaps, tournaments, and golf discounts, and the YOC program is a critical element to grow the game and make a positive impact on society.

On June 16 in Sacra-

mento, I had the opportu- nity to attend the NCGA Youth on Course annual scholarship luncheon and directly wit- ness the impact that the NCGA makes to many deserving youth in our region. It was inspirational and truly humbling to hear the stories of the recipients. It was also a time to reflect on the incred- ible progress that YOC has made, and meet many of the generous supporters of the organization who give back to the game. Youth on Course is celebrating its

10-year anniversary this summer. It is hard to overstate the importance of this program and its impact on the game of golf. Under the leadership of Executive Director Adam Heieck, the program has benefited nearly 25,000 kids with access to affordable golf and other programs. Over 400,000 rounds have been subsidized by the foundation at more than 180 golf courses in the region, enabling YOC members to pay no more than $5 per round. It is inspir- ing to see the impact that the game has made on so many kids that would not otherwise have had the opportunity. In addition to significantly reduced

green fees, Youth on Course provides internship opportunities, a caddie program at several courses and offers one of the largest scholarship programs in the region. This year, Youth on Course awarded $250,000 in college scholarships to 31 recipients. Since its inception, the scholarship program has touched the lives of 176 kids with nearly $1 million in awards. This is just the beginning, as Youth on Course has expanded to 11 states and is well on its way to becoming a national brand. NCGA members share a bond with

our shared passion for the game, and it was with great pride to hear how Youth on Course helps spread that passion to others. Golf has already made a meaningful impact

to the YOC members on and off the course, and the scholarship support will continue to pay dividends for a lifetime. The emotional stories help keep in perspective that golf is more than just a game, and when we work together we can really make a differ- ence in people’s lives. How can you continue to help?
