Driving: High Bomb Draw 1

The secret to hitting big drives is twofold: generate speed and then strike the ball with the proper launch characteristics to put that speed to good use.

Tip 1– POCKET BACK

A long tee shot begins with a good wind up. For most players, maximiz- ing their hip turn is the best way to get the shoulders rotating to their full potential. You may have heard to create power you should resist turning your hips. The fact is most people aren’t flexible enough to play with this style of movement. Throw in the fact that Bubba Watson turns his hips in the back swing more than anyone on Tour, and you should relax any skepticism toward this idea. A great swing cue to start your move away from the ball is to think “pocket back.” Notice how my right front pocket on my pants is turned back and behind me. This im- mediate turning from my lower body allows me to get my back to the target, storing maximum energy for my return to the ball.
