51st NCGA Public Links Championship Bayonet/Poppy Hills | April 25-26

The wait finally ended for 35-year-old Matt Cohn of San

Francisco. Cohn, the runner-up to Maverick McNealy at last year’s

NCGA Amateur Match Play Championship, sank a 5-foot putt for par on the first hole of a sudden death playoff to defeat Brian Helton and win his first NCGA title. “It wasn’t on the back of my mind. It was on the front of my mind,” said Cohn after fulfilling his quest to win an NCGA championship. After opening the final round with two straight bogeys,

it appeared that Cohn would only go backwards. Instead, he’d play his next 12 holes at 1-under par en route to a 74 and two-day total of 147. Helton, a former star at UC Santa Barbara who’d taken the lead with a 70 at Bayonet, struggled to a second round 77 but made birdie on the 18th to force extra holes. In the playoff, Helton mishit his approach shot, leaving

him 35 yards short of the green. The miscue led to a bogey, while Cohn made par. Defending champion Nick Moore, who nearly joined the duo in the playoff after carding a day-low 71 to finish at 148, stuck around to watch Cohn make his winning putt. Following the win, he was one of the first to congratulate the newest NCGA champion. “Welcome to the club,” Moore told Cohn.
