CIOB Career Development

LEARNING CURVE

MEMBERSHIP BY DEGREE Sometimes I would take the initiative

in my job role to gain the necessary experience. For example, I set up a risk register, organising and chairing a risk workshop to manage levels of risk on one of my projects. I had no previous experience of this and it was a good opportunity to use this to build on my knowledge.

What would be your advice for other members undertaking the PDP? Don’t be put off if you don’t think you don’t have the right experience to get through all the competencees. Talk to your colleagues and ask them to help to create opportunities to gain the experience. People will be very supportive. Sometimes you have to take the initiative yourself rather than wait for opportunities to come along.

in the industry. It is a work-based programme and usually takes two-three years to complete, as skills and expertise develop across a set of 12 competency-based units. Candidates are required to work with an assessor, ideally someone within their organisation who is a member of the CIOB and able to offer support in attaining the relevant experience and knowledge base.

Why did you want to become MCIOB? The graduate programme at AECOM is focused on achieving Chartered status, so it’s been

my goal since joining the company to complete the Professional Development

Programme. Becoming a Chartered Member tells people you are trained and competent. It’s incredibly important.

How did you find the experience? Completing the programme was relatively straightforward because I was fortunate to gain the experience I needed to complete the competencies. Some competencies may be harder to complete due to the nature of your roles and responsibilities, although you should be able to apply them to a variety of job roles within the industry.

Why did you want to become MCIOB? I decided soon after I started working at Wates that I wanted to get the full professional

qualification. I had to wait for a while until I had built up enough work experience to enable me to meet the competency requirements. I thought becoming MCIOB would reflect well on me and my professional capability. It’s definitely a good thing to put on

your CV and I think it gives you the competitive edge. Being part of the CIOB also provides excellent networking opportunities and CPD.

How did you find the whole experience? There is a lot of work involved gathering evidence and writing the report showing how you meet the different competencies.
