Novus North West paid a return visit to Manchester Victoria Station recently,

eight months after its last site tour, to view the progress made.

Network Rail’s project manager Faisal Farooq, gave a presentation and showed 24 construction managers around the station. Progress was evident everywhere. The station – a Grade II listed building – was

voted the worst station in the country in a 2009 Department for Transport report. But a £44m facelift is due to be completed in late spring this year. Contractor Morgan Sindall has faced many challenges especially as the train station remained fully operational: demolition of all of the train shed roofs; finding human remains from the plague

The CIOB in Scotland’s annual dinner will this year feature a ‘fun casino’ . Every year this black-tie event

introduces a new element. Last year mini steak and vegetarian pies were on offer later in the

evening, but new for 2015 is a casino, running from 11pm until 1am, when the speakers and the meal have concluded. “It will be fun money and chips and there will be spot prizes. We hope this will encourage everyone to stay

late into the night and make as many new contacts as possible – key to the objective of the dinner,” says Lynn McKay, branch manager. Booking packages are still available: the Silver package

at £1,250 (inc VAT) for a table of 10, includes welcome drink at VIP reception, and publicity opportunities. The Bronze package is £700 for a table of 10. Individual Seats are available at £70 per seat. The event is sponsored by

period; an 8x11m culvert carrying the river Irk underneath part of the building site; and erection of 15 steel box girder rib units (weighing up to 80 tonnes and 94 metres in length). In order to minimise disruption for the passengers, only parts of the work have taken place during the day. Some major work, like installation of the roof ribs, has taken place outside operational time. The station features clear, light -reflecting panels made from ETFE (ethylene tetraflouroethylene), technology that has been used with success at Manchester Piccadilly Station and the Eden Project. Internal refurbishment includes wooden panelling in the Smoking Room, the mosaic floor in the First Class Room, and the stained glass dome of the old Grill Room.

overview of smaller schemes, the importance of data and a case study of BIM in action on a civil engineering project.
