bhinav singh, m.d., calls himself a “small- town sleep doc.”
But the board-certifi ed
physician has helped NBA players get the sleep they need to follow their dreams and aided the eff orts of pilots and surgeons so they could perform their pressure-packed jobs to the best of their ability.
Now, Singh is sharing the strate- gies and tools developed during his 15 years as medical director for the Indiana Sleep Center and sleep coach for the NBA’s Indiana Pacers to help patients get a good night’s rest in Sleep to Heal: 7 Simple Steps to Better Sleep. Singh believes that if you “help
someone’s sleep get better, their lives get better” — and he has seen fi rst- hand just how much sleep aff ects a person during their day-to-day life. “Sleep is a hidden tool that is there
every night,” he said. “Just treat it well and it will give you so much back.” Singh doesn’t subscribe to the idea that sleep is simply a pillar of overall health — he contends it is the founda- tion of health. He hopes the stories, experiences, and tips he shares in the book create what he calls “360 degrees of sleep awareness.” He argues that “everyone must know about their sleep” because when one person doesn’t sleep well, it has a “ripple eff ect” on whoever is around them the next day.
Singh didn’t set out to become an expert on the value of a good night’s sleep. It is a career path he stumbled on while studying for a degree in pub- lic health on a scholarship from a sleep research group.
After spending years analyzing
patients’ sleep habits and problems, he said the most rewarding part of his job is understanding that everyone’s sleep needs are diff erent, and he’s intent on tailoring solutions that will work for the patient.
His patients have been employed as everything from plumbers to musi- cians to broadcasters and carpenters,

oy Hibbert, a two-time NBA All-Star, may have Dr. Abhinav Singh to thank for improving his game.
Even after Hibbert was diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma, Singh said team doctors for the Indiana Pacers were still trying to figure out if something else was preventing the center from performing to the best of his ability on the court. A sleep evaluation revealed he had sleep apnea, a
condition Singh said can absolutely present itself in athletes 74 NEWSMAX | SEPTEMBER 2023 who are in peak physical shape. After the diagnosis and the creation of a game
plan to ensure better sleep, Singh said Hibbert went on to play some of the best games of his career. Singh said coming up with best practices for
basketball stars is challenging because the athletes are constantly on the road and have inconsistent schedules. The advice he gives to leading basketball stars is the same he gives to patients who visit him at his of ice: Getting a good night’s sleep is all about having a “process” that remains consistent. — M.H.
and over the years, Singh said he has learned that “everyone experiences sleep problems diff erently.”
Coming up with a solution that works best is what Singh calls the “fun” of his job.
“The book became a collection of all of these patients I was able to help,” he said. “I saw lives changing.” While there will be variations in life, he said a person’s nighttime routine shouldn’t change. He notes that
