Biden Energy Policies Made Bad Situation Worse

resident joe biden tried to put a brave face on the economic after- shocks of the Ukraine
crisis. “I will not pretend this will be
painless,” he said as gas prices soared even higher. He pledged “to deploy all the tools and au- thority at our disposal to provide relief at the gas pump.” In fact, Biden has already
done far too much to make the energy shocks from Ukraine more painful than they had to be. His policies have made the U.S. substantially less able to meet the Ukraine crisis. “Biden canceled the Key-
stone Pipeline, banned drilling on federal land, and declared war on American energy pro- duction,” says GOP Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas. “We warned him this would
raise costs for Americans and put our national security at risk.” President Donald Trump’s
former national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, says the goal of the U.S. must always be to align our national security policy with our energy policy. He fi nds it inexplicable “why
the Biden administration can- celed a Canadian pipeline and greenlighted the Russian pipe- line, Nord Stream 2.”
On top of that, Biden’s chaot-
ic withdrawal from Afghanistan emboldened Vladimir Putin to roll the dice in Ukraine. Biden has worked hard to
make the U.S. less energy inde- pendent and less able to send liquid natural gas and crude oil to our European allies to make up for crippling losses in Rus- sian exports. A week before the Ukraine
invasion, Biden appointees at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission had erected new regulatory barriers that essen- tially made it impossible for the U.S. to build another LNG ex- port terminal. Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin
of West Virginia called the move “reckless.” The Russians were mean-
while celebrating the fact that Germany has shut down its nuclear reactors and is thus de- pendent on Russia for 50% of its natural gas and 41% of its gaso- line and heating oil. Russian offi cials must be
agog at how Biden has undercut U.S. energy independence. “We have never seen such a
huge gap between the foreign policy needs of the United States in energy and the complete re- fusal of U.S. policy makers to re- sist the special interest demands
