Te team behind Fibre Systems magazine is excited to bring you the fourth edition of our Fibre Yearbook. Tose of you with long memories may remember that the very first Fibre Yearbook was at the end of 2019, to last the entirety of 2020 and have a presence at all of the industry events that year. But, the best laid plans, as they say! Happily, despite the unavoidable lack of
face-to-face industry events, the Fibre Yearbook has found its place as an essential companion for optical communications professionals and, three years and too many lockdowns to count later, we are very excited that this issue (at the time of going to press, anyway) is scheduled to make an appearance at the key industry events of 2023. During this time, of course, what the pandemic helped to demonstrate is just how essential high-speed, reliable connectivity is for people’s everyday lives, and with the critical need for more high-capacity networks, full-fibre has become more widely recognised as the best – and arguably, only – viable solution. Tat’s not to say that the industry isn’t still facing
challenges. Cost, logistics, politics, associated technology, fibre supply, and installation skill requirements are just some of the things still affecting network builds, and the industry is working hard to overcome these issues. Tere will be a huge appetite for higher service levels as subscribers increase, and even more varied product ranges will be an important development. Operators will also need to be able to adapt their networks for digital as more intelligent networks emerge with soſtware innovations, next generation coherent optics and other innovations. Te coming pages include opinions from

leading names in optical communications on what the biggest issues will be over the next 12 months, and how, as an industry, we can resolve these. It includes a look at the state of the market for fibre deployment in Europe and the U.S. and what work is being done in the next 12 months to move towards copper switch-off (page 10). On page 14 we look at the importance of sustainability and how operators are making their networks more environmentally friendly and power-efficient. With a big trend towards openness, we also hear from experts on how best to achieve true interoperability on page 18. With in-person events back in business once
more, I’m hopeful that this will continue and excited to meet people, network and find out about new technology throughout 2023. Until then, keep doing what you are doing, stay safe and stay in touch!
