At the small but perfectly-formed APE 2020 conference in Berlin this month, change and collaboration were very much on the menu. Representatives from across the industry came together in the bullet- riddled Leibniz Hall, in the Berlin- Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, bringing different perspectives on how to tackle key issues and make progress – and to identify new opportunities for players across the industry. A key part of the move towards


open science is in peer review, and on page 4 of this issue, Rebecca Pool looks at the latest twists and turns in the field. Transparency in peer review appears to be a key aim for most players – but embracing transparency isn’t necessarily straightforward. Many publishers have historically faced practical difficulties to adopt such models, hindered by complex and established journal workflows. One particularly striking
