This edition of ToolBUSINESS+HIRE Magazine should be reaching you near the end of July – it always feels a long stretch from the June edition, which goes to print at the end of May. This gives everyone here a chance to have a bit of a break and recharge the batteries. So looking back at my last letter, at the time the country was in election fever

with many wild predictions about how the electorate would vote. In the end most of the polls were way out and the government is now in the position of having to govern with no party having an overall majority. Looking back over the past year since the referendum it does rather seem as if we lurch from one crisis to another with no party having a real plan about the way forward. In the business world it has led to a prolonged period of uncertainty with many being very cautious about how to proceed in the present political climate. Maybe it is time to consider a cross-party Brexit committee? The country certainly needs a period of stability to concentrate on the economy and bringing about a Brexit deal that will be in the best interests of all concerned. Soon after the election I read some very interesting articles on the Future of

Construction in the UK. As one of our most important industries it is vital it continues to compete on the world stage. At present it is weathering the storm relatively well, whilst having to cope with the uncertainties of currency swings and lack of homegrown skills and talent. However in the list of the top 100 global construction companies, the UK has only one, and no UK construction company is competing well in the overseas market. We face the challenge in the future of the possibility of many other global construction industries moving in to the UK market. For SME’s within the construction industry it is to be hoped that the government sticks to it’s ambitious target of building

1.5 million homes between 2015 and 2022, but also considers introducing legislation for a retrofitting programme to improve the energy efficiency of existing homes. This would provide significant economic stimulus and create thousands of jobs. So, back to our recharged batteries! Peter has had a very busy month testing out and writing reviews on the following: - A portable generator from CAT An electric Disc Cutter from Diaquip A pair of boots and a pair of sneakers from Buckler Boots Some Levellers and Laser Markers from Draper Tools. He also spoke to THS members Lee Garth Tools from Doncaster, and visited Master Abrasives in Daventry. See their

company profiles on pages 16/17 and 20/21. Add to this, visits by Peter and myself to Plantworx at Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome, and to Draper Tools in Chandlers Ford

to see at first hand the amazing new range of socketry launched earlier in the summer. Sadly this month we see the departure of Linda Oxley as Assistant Editor, so for the remainder of the summer Rhys

Williams will be taking over as he did last year. Please write to him at editorial@airstream.co.uk with any editorial requests. And news. Also, do not forget to visit our website www.toolbusiness.co.uk . Often news is posted there before appearing in the

magazine and past editions can also be viewed, as well as links to companies and videos accompanying some of the reviews. I hope you enjoy reading this magazine and the online news.
