roundup
Staying with this medium, Welsh National Opera’s first full season back concludes in October and what better way to round things off than with their stunning production of Madam Butterfly at Wales Millennium Centre on Fri 1 Oct Puccini, as with Il Tabarro, provides a stunning, sensual and seductive score as we follow the heartbreaking story of Butterfly who longs for day when her husband returns. Packed with passionate music and epic scenes, this is world-class opera in a world-class venue.

Back in mid-Wales, we find another Welsh company performing at a Welsh venue with Ballet Cymru’s Giselle at Theatr Brycheiniog. This Critics’ Circle Award winning company will put their own stamp on this tale of love and loss as they always do, bringing relevance, poignancy and grittiness to this most romantic of ballets. The production will also feature a new score by acclaimed composer and harpist Catrin Finch, promising to make it a special opening night for the tour in Brecon on Fri 15 Oct.

Described as a story of hope, from Afghanistan to Wales, Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff will present their own production, The Boy With Two Hearts from Sat 2 until Sat 23 Oct. Set in Herat in Afghanistan, a young mother makes a speech demanding freedom for Afghan women, angering local Taliban leaders who issue a warrant for her execution. Forced to flee, the story follows her across Europe to her final destination, the UK – a long and frightening journey that makes for tense viewing. The tension is heightened as the Amiris learn to live with nothing and their son’s life-threatening heart condition worsening. Another deeply timely piece of theatre which promises to be a real highlight in the Welsh calendar this autumn.

Finally, on to Carmarthenshire and The Miners’ Institute in Ammanford. Based on true stories, Undermined is an apt location to tell the tale of the many men and women who stood up for their rights during the 1984 miners’ strikes. “One man, one chair and one pint” is the stated itinerary for sole actor Daniel Mellor’s performance – by all accounts a powerful, poignant play which will have you laughing and crying in equal measure. It plays for one night only, on Thurs 7 Oct.
