Song Society’s Vaughan Williams Memorial Library (VWML) based at Cecil Sharp House, London is undertaking a substantial new project to index, for the first time, what folk songs are about. This important new subject index for folk songs, along with a thesaurus of keywords, will be made freely available on the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library’s website. The new tool will provide a powerful new way to explore the Library’s comprehensive online resources, alongside existing indexes and catalogues. efdss.org

James Madison Carpenter’s renowned folk collection, recorded around Britain over seventy-five years ago and stored in America ever since, has been brought to new online audiences, thanks to a project led by the University of Aberdeen’s Elphinstone Institute in partnership with the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS). The collection has been incorporated into the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library’s digital archive, already catalogued by the Elphinstone Institute. efdss.org

EATMT have announced the creation of a new free online resource of East Anglian Music. Trad Anglia Music Archive is a living archive of traditional music in East Anglia. It is a growing collection of recordings submitted by people living in the counties of Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk, encompassing many different strands of traditional music – from sea shanties and unaccompanied singing to jigs, reels, hornpipes and everything in between. It is a non-profit online resource for reference and listening pleasure, as well as a survey of the types of traditional music and songs being played and sung in East Anglia right now. Halsway Manor National Centre for Folk Arts, has received a grant of £387,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). Forthcoming non-fiction ‘folk

horror’ film Arcadia is a mash-up of 100 years of archive footage (from the BFI National Archive and other archives) with an original soundtrack from Portishead’s Adrian Utley and Goldfrapp’s Will Gregory. It paints a vibrant picture of how the British relate to the countryside, taking in seasonal shifts, folk customs and traditional activity, environmental issues, natural disasters, harvesting, hunting and loads more. The score also features the voice of Anne Briggs. Released by the BFI and screening in selected cinemas now, look for the DVD release on 20th August.
