parts of their career, though not in versions that have ever seen the light of day before. XX is choc-full of alternate takes, remixes, live versions and collaborations, creating an alter- native history of the band which is very much in keeping with their defining off-kilter spirit.
This double disc set also includes a sec- ond CD of dub mixes on which the band hand over their material to such heavy hitters as Mad Professor, Dr Das (of Asian Dub Founda- tion fame) and Dirt Music to create an alter- native version of their alternative version of their career
In truth, there are maybe one too many samples of heavy breathing and orgasmic moans for my taste and I think us non-Turkish speakers miss out by not understanding the band’s socially conscious lyrics. But all in all this is a fine compilation, well-programmed in its shifts from driving rock to digi-reggae (Sly and Robbie are in the mix) to delicate folk and out into all kinds of weirdness. Nice- ly packaged too, with some interesting pic- tures.

Harmonising in Spanish in distinctly Afro-Colombian vocal style, Margaux Dela- tour and Alejandra Charry energetically front the French-Colombian ensemble Pixvae (named after the tropical peach palm). Back- ing is Jaime Salazar (vocals,
percussion), Romain Dugelay (baritone sax, keyboards), Damien Cluzel (electric guitar) and Léo Dumont (drums). Pixvae reworks Colombian Pacific coast strains of the African- descent population including currulao, with pieces such as Este Niño Quiere, Garcita Morena and El Nazareno. In addition to two Salazar originals, Pixvae turns inside out such Pacific marimba classics as La Luna Está Flore- ciendo, by José Antonio Torres Solís ‘Gualajo’, El Curruco by Justino García, and Hugo Can- delario González Sevillano’s Lancherito. With a relentless pulsing percussive sound that could be described as metal jazz, Pixvae is a hard-working touring band widely heard around France, with occasional forays into Switzerland, Holland, Denmark and Brazil.

This is the CD Emilia was talk- ing about in my piece about her in fR 400, and it’s rich stuff. It opens with her big, powerful, exuberant Spelpuma, combining several melodic themes that hint at Bach, baroque and Swedish tradition, with the whole
team – that’s Bridget Marsden and Emma Ahlberg Ek on four and five-stringed violins, Anders Lofberg’s cello, Olle Linder on double bass, and Fredrik Gille and Dan Svensson on drums and percussion.
Then into the traditional Halling Etter
Bråta Per, learned from Ellika Frisell, in which the nyckelharpa sounds remarkably hardanger- fiddle-like – quite a feat with a keyed instru- ment, but Amper wasn’t named world cham- pion for nothing. And, while she’s always thought of herself as primarily a nyckelharpa player, she’s a fine singer. The song she wrote
