Enough of this Cup stuff, let’s pay tribute to a former wordsmith who too rarely graced these pages and who then later reinvented himself as a true master craftsman and the proprietor of Viking Boats in Ullapool


Torridon Probably my favourite project (right), possibly because there was no frantic deadline. The 15ft boat was destined for Loch Torridon, a family craft for use during holidays. She has the sections of our 18ft sjekte, Florence Oliver, but at 3ft shorter her beam/length ratio is greater; I also filled her out amidships to give her a little more initial stability. But she also has the built-in water ballast system I have used previously, which makes her lighter to trail and yet, when fully ballasted, gives her an extra 150kg of weight but, being water, it won’t act like lead ballast in the event of a swamping. She does carry a large buoyancy bag amidships, by the way. The rig is standing lug which, being boomless, won’t set so well


downwind but also won’t clout youngsters on the head. The sail was made by Steve Hall of North Sea Sails –maker of all my sails. Although of Scandinavian descent, I think the modifications make her more of a Scottish boat. A Loch Torridon skiff, perhaps?


Freshwater This 16ft trolling boat (right) was commissioned by a grateful son for his father – she was a surprise retirement present to be used by him for salmon fishing with an old friend. Skiff-like in form, with a narrow waterline, she is clinker-built of larch on oak, with a rigid floor structure. Every effort was made to reduce the chances of pockets of stagnant water causing rot, hence she features open gunwales. The boat now lives on a mooring on Loch Insh. Adrian Morgan
