ell, the Fall sailing season has not slowed STC down much… if at all!
One of the “big deal” events this Fall was the ORC Worlds held in early October and hosted by New York Yacht Club. Many STC members not only competed and were found on the podium, but the event’s Race Chair (governor Matt Gallagher) and Measure- ment and Ratings Chair (past commodore Ed Cesare) played prominent roles! Please check out Kate Somers’ article on page 66 for more details!
A mere week after the ORC Worlds found dozens of STC mem- bers, together with an equal number of Larchmont YC members, out on the water and shoreside for the 2024 Intercollegiate Off- shore Regatta. The event is organized by the Storm Trysail Club and Larchmont Yacht Club and supported by the Storm Trysail Foundation via donations from generous individuals including Storm Trysail Members and event sponsors. This generosity keeps the event free of charge for all student competitors. Over 300 college sailors competed on 43 borrowed keel boats gen- erously donated for the event by their owners, many of whom sailed as safety officers. The competitors enjoyed excellent sailing conditions and race management, and equally excellent shoreside accommodations at LYC. A very huge thank you goes out to the many volunteers who offer up their time, expertise, and boats to inspire and motivate these sailors to seek out more racing oppor- tunities outside of college. For more on this year’s event, please click here:
stormtrysail.org/2024-intercollegiate-recap Next up on the STC sailing calendar is the Sailfish Club of Florida’s 68th Annual Wirth M. Munroe Race to Palm Beach on December 6. The Organizing Authority for the race includes the Sailfish Club and the Storm Trysail Club, together with the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club. Race management is provided by all three clubs along with the SORC. Racers can choose from two courses: the 60-mile Classic Course that starts in Miami or the 40-mile Sprint Course that starts in Fort Lauderdale. Both courses finish off Palm Beach. Classes include ORC, PHRF and Multihulls. All sailors are welcome at the Sailfish Club's legendary rum punch reception and seafood buffet awards dinner. To enter the Wirth Munroe Race, please go to:
yachtscoring.com/Miami2PB Following the race up the coast, is the one down the coast… the Lauderdale to Key West Race starting January 9, 2025. Orig- inally organized in 1975, it has evolved into one of the great dis- tance races in North America. Today, racers from around the country come to enjoy the warm waters of the Gulf Stream in Jan- uary and the unique hospitality of Key West at the finish line. The 2025 event is the 50th running and one you do not want to miss! I look forward to seeing many old friends, meeting new friends, and enjoying the good old Southern Hospitality of our partners Lauderdale Yacht Club and SORC at the Southernmost Beach Café on Saturday afternoon!
