FLEXIBILITY IS one of the key advantages of wireless technology, with hybrid solutions allowing existing systems to be upgraded or extended more economically and with less disruption.


Royal College of Physicians


Almost 20 years ago, EMS supplied the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh with one of the very first wireless networked fire systems, a System 5000 solution comprising two wirelessly networked panels and more than 250 devices. A decade and a half on, ahead of extensive site wide refurbishments, the client asked if its trusted fire system could be upgraded. The client wanted updated features and


the latest technology, but with the same reliability and simplicity of maintenance and – most importantly – no loss of system coverage at any point during the upgrade. EMS attended the site with the installer, Stanley Security, to advise on the best way forward. A strategic upgrade programme was


planned involving running both the existing and the new systems side by side, which would therefore allow a device by device replacement programme, ensuring that all areas remained fully covered at all times. The EMS wireless systems were flexible enough to allow the original System 5000 equipment to be redeployed as a temporary system within the construction zone during the extensive refurbishment in 2016/17, with a further installation phase to follow. The upgrade was handled by Stanley Security and, as with the original solution, consisted of


two wireless networked control panels, but now with the area of coverage significantly extended. The installation was completed within a few weeks as a result of the careful advanced planning.


Shieldhill Castle Hotel


There are now many useful examples of EMS wireless and hybrid solutions in action, with the technology suitable for almost any application, from historic buildings to ultra modern corporate estates. A good example of a hybrid system allowing installation flexibility can be seen at the Shieldhill Castle Hotel, Biggar. The hotel required an extension to its fire alarm


system, including a newly converted Victorian stable block, accommodating ten en suite bedrooms. With a hardwired system already in place and a busy site with little room for downtime, a hybrid FireCell Fusion system was the preferred solution. The merged hybrid system would also see the stable block wirelessly communicating with the main system. AFA Fire & Security were called upon to install


a new system, designed in conjunction with EMS. AFA handled the project very quickly, linking all the existing devices and their cabling, and therefore allowing the existing system to be monitored by the new FireCell control panels. A FireCell Fusion hybrid system allows system planners to mix wireless and wired devices – 126 per loop, wired or virtual – using EMS technology. For further flexibility, a radio loop module (RLM) can be added to the wired loop, providing up to 31 additional wireless devices to a specific location
