FROM THE EDI TOR
HERITAGE AND INNOVATION
W ISSUE 75 | 2019
elcome to our 75th edition! It all started back in November 2001 when the first edition of Families in Business (as it was originally known) rolled off the press with a mixture of interviews, insights, and advice. Preserving a proud
heritage, while always looking for opportunities to innovate and expand is the hallmark of a great family business and it is these same qualities that CampdenFB has upheld over the past 18 years. You can see the innovations in the montage of different covers we have selected as this edition’s cover, from the original Families in Business editions, through our illustrated series, to our modern glossy ensembles. Inside the edition we’ve kept with this mix of tradition and innovation, kicking off our Research & Rankings section from page 43 with a review of 10 iconic covers. That then leads into in the ‘75 for 75’ special feature from page 46, where we’ve trawled through our archives to bring you 75 family business leaders who are either leading their families with aplomb or part of a crop of young rising stars. A proud heritage of humility is at the heart of the Saraf family, the focus of our main profile from page 14, who are in the midst of bringing their third generation into their Indian steelmaking business. Philanthropy is a core value of many multigenerational families,
but how many have been practicing it since 1672? James Beech speaks with the UK’s 11th-generation Hoare family in our Wealth & Purpose section. Then it’s to innovation with Susan Lingeswaran who has interviewed two energised next-generation entrepreneurs in separate pieces from page 22, the first is Germany’s Verena Bahlsen and the next is India’s Anirudh Damani. Innovation doesn’t come much more futuristic than quantum computing, and though it’s still a way off commercialisation, we look at how it might affect family businesses and investors from page 74, before Susan Lingeswaran examines the intricacies of philanthropy among Asia’s fast-growing and diverse economies.
