MATERIALS TESTING
Load cells measure limits of materials
Q
uality control equipment specialist Hoytom has boosted its capabilities by integrating a range of load cells into its machines, which ensures maximum accuracy throughout its
measurement process. The Spanish company manufactures quality control machines and testing equipment and provides on-site calibration services to its customers, issuing the appropriate certificates on the condition of the machines, including all ranges of force, stress, strain and hardness. The range of test equipment made by Hoytom includes electromechanical and electrohydraulic machines for materials testing. And the capacities of its machines ranges from 5kN up to 2,000kN for tensile tests; even more for compression testing. The Hoytom laboratory has been certified by
ENAC (the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation of Spain) since 1996 and provides calibration services on the customer’s premises, issuing the relevant certificates on the condition of machines, including all areas of force, stress, strain, and hardness. Hoytom’s test machines are the hidden guarantee that ensures many products on the market meet their design function. Test machines are used throughout the product manufacturing process − from raw materials through to the many intermediate parts that go to make up an assembly. Founded in 1961, Hoytom is based in the Basque town of Leioa, near Bilbao, and staffed with experts in the field of static destructive testing, who stretch or compress devices under test until breakage. A family business of three generations, ever since the early days of the 1960s, Hoytom understands that quality, drive and the best equipment are key factors to being competitive in the complex world of testing at national and international levels. This pervasive activity guarantees the quality of

virtually any item in any sector with an incredibly wide range of testing procedures. Hoytom equipment has always been involved in this field and has tested many different items – from nuts, bolts and different types of steel through to composites, automotive structures, aircraft parts, cables and concrete. The managers say they feel most comfortable when dealing with large machines and tests with a certain degree of complexity. Of course the functionality of the machines is the most important requirement but for several years now the company has also offered attractive designs to equip its customers’ facilities and the company now exports 50 per cent of its machines. The equipment and testing machines supplied also include hardness testers and pendulums used to determine the hardness and toughness of materials.
LOAD CELLS For its universal and hardness testing machines, which carry out Rockwell and Brinell hardness tests, Hoytom has always relied on HBK’s HBM brand products, namely load cells, and integrates them in all its equipment, to the point where it has become one of HBK’s main customers in Spain. This is mainly due to the confidence Hoytom has in the accuracy and reliability of HBM U10M force transducers, ensuring the minimum values of linearity deviation, hysteresis and reversibility error, together with a high degree of reproducibility. This commitment increased in 2015, when
Hoyton’s current management took over. Striving to improve the machines it made, management identified that the load cell was a key element, so ensuring Hoytom would continue with HBM as its first choice. The company’s previous experience backed up this decision, since HBM had a long
