BUTCHERY EMPLOYER TRAILBLAZER GROUP APPOINTS NEW LEADERS TO DRIVE MEAT INDUSTRY APPRENTICESHIPS
The Butchery Employer Trailblazer Group (BETG) has appointed a new Chair and for the first time a Vice- Chair, to take forward all three meat industry apprenticeships in England: the Level 2 Butcher, Level 3 Advanced Butcher and the Level 2 Abattoir Worker.
Darren Andrew, Operations Director at the Preston site of Cranswick PLC, will chair the group alongside David Lishman, owner of Lishman’s of Ilkley, who takes up the Vice-Chair role.
Andrew brings with him 30 years’ experience in the food processing industry, including a decade in Operational Director roles.
Lishman has run multi-award winning butchers, Lishman’s of Ilkley for 35 years, during which time he has also captained the ‘British Beefeaters’ team of expert butchers in the World Butchers Challenge competition.
From its inception, a key objective for the retail pathway of the apprenticeship has been to restore the craft of butchery, something it is widely accepted to be achieving and that Lishman is eager to promote. Retail butchers have proven to be both resilient and innovative during the pandemic, qualities that Lishman says he wants to ensure the apprenticeship helps develop.
Representing National Craft Butchers interests on the employer group are three NCB members: Sarah-Jane Trueman, David Gigli and John Mettrick.
The first meeting of the new BETG is expected to take place this month. Applications to join the group and make a difference in shaping meat industry apprenticeships are welcomed from all members. Those interested should ideally have experience of
working with apprentices and be able to commit to 3-4 online meetings per year. For more information on joining the BETG contact James Richardson, End-point Assessment Manager at FDQ at
