COMMENT

It feels good to be getting back to normal as we can at last enjoy a pint and a burger in the garden of our favourite pub. In fact, meat seems to have been on the media menu of late with the BBC’s use of questionable data for their Blue Peter Green Badge campaign. Incredibly, this encouraged children to take a ‘Supersize Plants Pledge’ and replace meat with more ‘climate friendly’ plant-based dishes. We welcomed the strong collective response of AHDB, QMS and HCC, correcting the data and defending our hard- working members of the meat industry. This resulted in widespread media coverage and forced the BBC to change the information on their website.

National Craft Butchers has long had a close collaboration with Scottish Craft Butchers, and you’ll see a lot more of us coming together to jointly represent independent craft butchers north and south of the border. If you feel there’s a burning issue that needs our attention, then please get in touch. The BBC’s climb down is proof positive that when we work together we can combat what, in some quarters of the media, appears to be an anti-meat agenda.

This month in Craft Butcher we’ve turned our attention to something that is everyone’s problem – packaging waste.

The scale of this problem is simply mind- blowing. Writing the article caused us to reflect on our own responsibilities. That’s why you’ll notice that this issue arrived in a new home compostable wrapper, instead of the difficult to recycle polythene wrapper we have used to date.

Finally, on an administrative note, our next Annual General Meeting will be held via Zoom on Tuesday 29 June and we hope you’ll be able to find time to attend. Details on how to join will be published soon. We’d like to share our plans with you and hear what you have to say about the future of your Federation, so please join us.
