CRAFTBUTCHER JULY/AUGUST 2017 l Get ready for Summer - Raise the Steaks! T

he UK barbecue market is now worth more than

£7 billion, up from £150 million in 1997.

Here in the UK we are barbecuing more than ever, the average number of barbecues hosted by families each year has more than trebled over the last 10 years. In fact, the UK is now Europe’s leading barbecue nation. Barbecuing is seen as a form of cooking in its own right, as well as an enjoyable social occasion. The rising popularity presents a huge opportunity for butchers this summer – kits and materials are available to order from our website for a small delivery charge at qsmbeefandlmab.co.uk/POS.

Our new ‘Simply BBQ’ booklet covers top tips for your customers to get the best out of their meat on the BBQ. You can also create your own version of this booklet on our website and add your own company logo and contact details. The Summer BBQ kits include posters, recipe pads and vinyls for the counter. Use these materials effectively really to draw aention to your summer BBQ range to help boost your sales. A number of videos on how to get the best out of the BBQ are available to download and play in the shop or share on social media.

Mike Richardson, AHDB Beef & Lamb’s independent retail sector manager, said: “Given the importance of whole carcase utilisation we have developed

the new ‘Top Cuts’ guide. This shows a range of steak cuts for beef, lamb and pork. It has all the cuing specifications you need to prepare the steaks as well as information on current consumer trends, use of different flavours and added- value products.”

Customers are now wanting to see a range of different flavour profiles with their meat – sweet chilli, BBQ, hot and spicy and hickory being among the favourites. This is another way to make the summer eating BBQ season more exciting, whether that be with steaks, gourmet burgers or pulled meats.

Mike, said: “As the popularity of barbecuing continues to grow, so does the desire to try something new and innovative.

We wanted to show butchers and their customers there a number of cuts out there, that aren’t typically associated with barbecuing, but work extremely well on the barbecue. We have produced a series of quick and clear videos which will help demonstrate this and can be viewed on our website qsmbeefandlamb.co.uk/ library-videos.”

Raise the Steaks – consumer campaign

AHDB’s Simply Beef and Lamb Raise the Steaks campaign is running throughout the summer months encouraging consumers to improve their barbecue with lamb and beef steaks. They are calling in support from comedy YouTuber,

Anto Sharp and online ‘Food Busker’, John Quilter – who together have more than 1.4 million followers across social media channels.

AHDB is targeting the country’s barbecue market because it presents a huge opportunity for the lamb and beef industry. In particular, the consumer campaign will benefit lamb by increasing demand during the months of June, July and August when English lamb is dominant in its supply to market.
