Achievements of the Society of Maritime Industries
The Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) has continued to provide a wide range of activities both internationally and in the UK during the last year for the benefit of the maritime engineering business community. Our members’ wide ranging interests are reflected through five areas of business, each advised on policy by a Council of members experienced in those business areas:
n THE COMMERCIAL MARINE GROUP represented by the CMG Council
n THE DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY GROUP represented by the DTG Council
n THE MARITIME AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS GROUP represented by the MASG Council
n THE MARITIME DEFENCE & SECURITY GROUP represented by the MDSG Council
n THE MARINE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY GROUP represented by the MSTG Council
n THE PORTS AND TERMINALS GROUP represented by the PTG Council
However, in response to members’ widening business interests we added a sixth focus group last May, called the Digital Technology Group. Member companies involved in the development and provision of digital services to the maritime industries participate, and range from large defence primes through to universities and
SMEs focussed on niche areas of business. All gain from shared learning, the creation of new contacts and increased awareness of new technological innovations often from outside the industry. In keeping with our other groups the DTG Council has been formed to represent the interests of members.
By organising ourselves in this way SMI continues to ensure it seeks out business opportunities which meets the needs of its members across a broad range of markets in the maritime industries. Our activities follow our objectives of presenting members with business opportunities, assisting with research and innovation, lobbying government and NGOs to improve the business environment, facilitating networking opportunities and providing marketing and other services.
Business Overseas and in the UK
SMI has supported companies at seven international trade fairs overseas and two in the UK during the last year. The overseas trade fairs took place across the world in Australia, China, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, USA and Vietnam. Most of these trade fairs were supported by grants from the Department for International Trade in our capacity as an accredited Trade Challenge Partner. In addition, the exhibitions in South Korea and China received support from the GREAT campaign to enable us to provide enhanced activity around the UK pavilion. This is an important part of our support for companies wishing to seek visibility in those markets which offer good prospects for future business.
In the UK, we made a welcome return to the National Oceanography Centre for Ocean Business 2019. SMI also returned to the annual workboat show, Seawork International in Southampton where we once again managed the Shipbuilding Pavilion. Companies which are new to the event find that participation in the pavilion is a great way to introduce their products and services to a wide range of potential customers from the UK and overseas.
SMI UK Pavilion at Kormarine 2019
As part of our Digital Technology Group activity and in association with the Department for International Trade, SMI helped to facilitate two cyber security workshops with the local shipping communities in Athens and Singapore. These well attended events gave delegates a number of scenarios to resolve in an area of grave concern to many companies as they move to greater digitalisation of their operating functions. More workshops are planned in 2020 and interested companies should contact us or information.
