The annual handbook and members’ directory provides an opportunity to review the achievements of the Society (SMI) and also to inform our members’ customers about the industry renowned capabilities which exist within the UK and are widely sought throughout the world. As the leading trade association for companies in manufacturing, support and associated services for the maritime engineering industries, we strive to help those companies seeking new business and contacts for their development.
The government’s first major strategy for the sector was published early in 2019. Called Maritime 2050, many of the technology recommendations are within the remit of SMI. By the time this handbook is published the UK will have a new government and it is to be hoped that the substantial work expended on implementing the strategy will not have been lost and the importance of the sector to the UK economy will encourage the government to continue the good work. The updated study from Maritime UK shows the sector contributes £43 billion GVA to UK economic well‐being and employs 1.1 million people, larger than many other advanced technology sectors.
I was therefore delighted to see government has recognised the sector’s importance in its initial support for Maritime Research and Innovation UK (MarRI‐UK) which was formally launched in September 2019. This unique organisation brings together industry, our leading academic institutions and government to jointly tackle the global innovation and technology challenges on which the UK can take a lead. More information can be found in this handbook and I encourage you to join.
In other policy areas, SMI has been active in government workshops reviewing the nature of the UK’s future trading relationship with the rest of the world and, on the domestic front, ensuring that those working for the Ministry of Defence are not faced with unfair terms of business, namely unlimited liability.
The strength of SMI has always been the high level of engagement from its members who are prepared to serve on the Society’s Board and Councils working in tandem with a dedicated staff focussed on meeting our members’ requirements and I pay tribute to their commitment.
As you read this Directory I am certain you will realise that a sector’s trade association is an essential resource for any company in its influence over policymakers and in the services and advice it can give to guide a company in its business development. If you are a UK company operating in the maritime engineering sector, I encourage you to join the Society of Maritime Industries so that you too can gain that competitive advantage!
