Foreword Nadhim Zahawi
I am pleased to have been invited to provide the foreword to this year’s Society of Maritime Industries members’ directory. As the UK leaves the EU, our country will use its departure to build a truly global Britain; the ports, maritime business services, marine engineering, manufacturing and shipping industries will all have an important role to play.
The Prime Minister has pledged to reinvigorate shipbuilding in the UK and to realise this ambition he has appointed the Defence Secretary as the Shipbuilding Tsar. The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has concentrated its effort on maximising the competitiveness and productivity of shipbuilding. I would like to thank the Society of Maritime Industries for its important role in hosting the Maritime Enterprise Working Group, which is bringing together industry, government and academia to jointly tackle the challenge. Together we can win shipbuilding contracts at home and from overseas.
In November 2019 the contract to build five Type 31 frigates for the Royal Navy was awarded to Babcock. They will be built at their
Rosyth yard in Scotland where they will be making a £50 million investment in new facilities to meet the demanding build programme. At its height, Babcock has said the programme will employ a workforce of around 1,250 highly skilled roles in multiple locations throughout the UK, with around 150 new technical apprenticeships likely to be created. Babcock also envisage that the design and build of Type 31 will support a further 1,250 roles within the wider UK supply chain.
Furthermore, in 2019 the Government launched its Maritime 2050 strategy, which sets out our shared vision to prepare the industry for the challenges of the next thirty years and beyond. I know that the strategy has captured the imagination of the industry as evidenced by the great number of bids for research and technology funding.
The UK maritime sector has an extraordinary past and it’s important that we invest in its future. I must commend Society of Maritime Industries for its positive engagement with government. Continuing this close collaboration with our forthcoming initiatives will ensure that we continue this success story and strengthen our maritime industry in the UK.
