A Message from the Chief Executive

John Murray Chief Executive

The Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) is the voice of the UK maritime engineering and business sector and a leading member of Maritime UK which encompasses a diverse industry that covers all aspects of the maritime sector. The UK remains a substantial trading nation and a large proportion of the maritime industry’s sales turnover comes from our business overseas

through exporting our world‐class capabilities in engineering and technology.

This Review provides a snapshot of the wide range of engineering and technological solutions on offer from our members, with a particular attention on the move towards digitalisation in the industry and the attendant cyber risks which will need to be addressed. In recognition of these developments early in 2019, SMI formed a Digital Technology Group to provide the focus for members with an interest in developing business opportunities in this space.

Who are our members?

SMI members cover the whole of the maritime engineering and business enterprise and include companies which design, build, refit and modernise ships, and supply equipment and services for all types of commercial and naval ships, ports and terminals infrastructure, digital technology, maritime defence and security, marine science and technology, maritime autonomous systems and marine renewable energy.

Bringing together such a broad range of businesses dedicated to the maritime industry is SMI’s underlying strength, demonstrating the many cross‐cutting synergies which exist across all of the markets our members serve.

What we do for our members? SMI provides a range of services under five broad headings:

n Promoting business overseas and in the UK n Providing opportunities in research, technology and innovation n Improving the business environment n Creating networking opportunities n Marketing and profile opportunities

Furthermore, we provide market focus through six business interest areas each of which has its own Council to direct policy and activities and these fall into one or more of the above range of services. These six interest areas are:

n Commercial maritime operations, ship building, repair, and marine equipment

n Digital Technology n Marine science and technology n Maritime autonomous systems n Maritime defence and security n Ports and terminals infrastructure
