President’s Foreword

It gives me great pleasure to introduce the 2019 edition of the Society’s Annual Review.

The launch of the new Digital Technology Group within SMI has prompted us to look at the digitisation of many parts of the maritime industry and the associated cyber risks with the increase in remote or autonomous operations. Some of the key advanced technologies offered by members of the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) are presented as examples of the wide range of applications in this area.

Archie Bethel President

Earlier this year the government, through the Department for Transport, launched the strategy Maritime 2050: Navigating the Future. It is the first time that the maritime sector has received its own strategy encompassing all aspects of the maritime enterprise and it comes with a broad range of recommendations, many of which will be applicable to SMI members and the wider engineering community. SMI has undertaken to work with government officials to be the industry lead on many of the technology themes.

Last year we anticipated the establishment of the UK’s first truly national Maritime Research and Innovation Centre (MaRI‐UK). Thanks to a substantial grant from the Department for Transport and financial support from SMI member companies, Babcock International Marine and BMT Group, MarRI‐UK is now reality with a small administrative hub at the University of Strathclyde. By the time you read this, MarRI‐UK will have started running collaborative R&D competitions aimed at addressing some of the big challenges faced by the global industry.

This edition of the review will be published during the biennial London International Shipping Week (LISW) at which thousands of senior figures from the industry will converge on London from all over the world. SMI is once again

a member of the organising group of associations and will be playing its part in promoting the UK maritime hub as one of the world’s leading centres for all aspects of maritime business.

SMI is also a leading member of Maritime UK, the over‐arching body drawing together the shipping, ports, business services, engineering and leisure parts of the industry. As a member of a sector responsible for more than £40 billion added value to the UK economy, employing nearly one million people, we are increasingly finding a greater interest from policymakers to hear what we have to say. The result is that regular meetings with government ministers have become the norm as we press forward to improve the economic performance of the sector.

One of SMI’s major roles is to support the industry’s marketing and sales to both the domestic and international customer. We run an extensive programme of events and manage the pavilions for all the major maritime trade fairs, and we regularly receive overseas delegations eager to do business with the UK. Therefore, if you are an international reader you are welcome to contact us for more information on how UK companies can assist with your requirements. Equally if you are a UK based company which is seeking new business opportunities I invite you to read the Chief Executive’s message and contact him to find out how your company can benefit from being a member of the Society of Maritime Industries.

I hope you enjoy the Review.
