Eleven to 15-year-olds at risk of getting caught up in gang culture and serious organised crime are to be given one-to-one support in a bid to stop them becoming criminalised. The children’s charity Barnardo’s Cymru is partnering with Newport Live to launch a new project called Divert in Pillgwenlly and Ringland, two of Newport’s most deprived areas. The aim is to keep young people away from crime through individual support, work with their families and diversionary activities such as sport. As well as one to one work with those most at risk, workshops will also be run in secondary schools as part of a six-month pilot scheme funded by the Home Offi ce through the offi ce of the Police and Crime Commissioner. The results of the £100,000 project will be independently assessed by Swansea University before decisions are made whether it should be extended. Barnardo’s
Cymru currently
deliver children’s services in partnership with Newport City Council and will work with Gwent Police and Newport Youth
Off ending Service to identify young people on the path to serious and organised crime. Sarah Crawley, Director of Barnardo’s Cymru, said: “Some young people are knowingly drawn into crime whilst others are groomed and exploited and we have to see them as victims. Intelligence from the Barnardo’s National Counter
Traffi cking
Service shows that organised crime gangs in Wales are grooming children into serious and organised crime including “county lines” drug running and sexual exploitation, theft and burglaries.” The charity will work with 20 children and young people aged 11 to 15 and their families through an early intervention and prevention approach. The Divert funding follows the Home Secretary’s recent announcement of a public health approach to violent crime. Vulnerable young people at risk may have multiple issues, including behavioural, mental health and learning diffi culties. They may have dropped out of school, be isolated or be misusing drugs and alcohol.
