Not so shy Sophie wins Wales Young Volunteer of the Year award

Voter registration: 'Herculean effort' needed to close registration gap in final week

11.59pm on 26 November is the deadline to register to vote in the General Election on 12 December - but campaigners fear millions will be missing.

Sophie Hughes was so shy when she began volunteering at her local Barnardo’s Cymru shop that she barely had the courage to speak to a customer. But in the last three years the 19-year- old’s confidence has blossomed and her contribution to the Ammanford store has won her the title of Barnardo’s Young Volunteer of the Year for Wales. She was nominated for the award, presented by the Marsh Trust, by shop manager Sue Langford who has been delighted to see Sophie become such an important part of the team at Ammanford, one of the charity’s most successful shops. Sophie is now a vital part of the

volunteering team with the confidence to train new starters, chat to customers when operating the till and take a lead role in stocktaking. She has found a passion for figures and administration and has learnt a lot of life skills. Sophie was even brave enough to be interviewed by an ITV crew when they filmed the shop for a news item on how it has raised more than £1m for vulnerably children and families since it opened. Volunteering is a great way to increase your skills, boost your CV and make new friends. If you would like to volunteer you can call into your local Barnardo’s Cymru shop or find out more at https://www. barnardos.org.uk/get-involved/volunteer

Democracy campaigners are calling for a 'historic effort' to ensure the up-to 9.4m people who are not on the electoral register are signed up before the deadline. Te Electoral Reform Society note that while around 1.7m applications to register to vote have been made since the election was called, there are still millions likely to be missing, according to the independent organisation. Te ERS are calling for a 'registration revolution', urging parties to commit to moving towards automatic voter registration, including allowing people to sign up whenever they engage with public services/bodies. Tere are major demographic

inequalities in terms of who is on the electoral roll. Electoral Commission figures show that private renters remain the least likely to have up to date register entries (58%) compared to people who own their houses outright (91%). Registration levels are also low among young people aged 18-34, with only 71% correctly registered, compared to 94% for people aged 65 and over. Willie Sullivan, Senior Director of the ERS, said: "We need to see a herculean effort to bring in the 'missing millions' before the November 26th deadline. All of us have a role in signing up those hard-to-reach groups. It takes just 5 minutes to do at gov.uk/register-to-vote
