Physical education at The Bishop of Llandaff Church-in-Wales High School, Cardiff, has been given a boost with new kit donated by a local gym. Boxing pads and gloves provided by Elite Fitness will help students at the school get fi tter and hopefully help bring on aspiring athletes. The equipment has been funded by fundraising activities at white collar boxing events organised by Elite Fitness every six months at the Vale Hotel, Hensol.
Non-contact boxing teaches good hand-eye co- ordination, balance and spatial awareness, as well as promoting cardiovascular fi tness.
Simon Harling, a strength and conditioning coach who runs Elite Fitness, said: “Young people need to be exposed to as many stimuli as possible to make them well-rounded sportsmen and women, and boxing ticks all the boxes.”
Elite boxing coach Mark Randall visits schools to assist PE teachers to deliver non-contact boxing programmes, and year eight students at the school used the new kit for the fi rst time on the last day of term.
Dan Elliott, PE teacher and head of year 11 at the Bishop of Llandaff, said: “Sport is physical activity, and is especially important for young students. We like to provide opportunities to widen the variety of sports and introduce competitive elements with fi tness training. Non-contact boxing improves overall physicality and has a bearing on the physical activity of these young people outside school.” If you want to know more about learning how to box, take part in one of Elite Fitness’s white collar boxing events, or fi nd out more about providing boxing equipment for your club or school, visit www.elitefi
