Unite against dementia at Cardiff Memory Walk
Teresa Williams Cardiff Memory Walk.
People across the generations are being called on to unite against dementia by signing up for Alzheimer’s Society’s Cymru’s Cardiff Memory Walk. Teresa Williams,
from
Ely, Cardiff , whose mum has dementia, is urging people to register for the event to help the charity raise money for research and services. Alzheimer’s Society is pledged to invest £150 million in the next
decade in the search for better treatments and work towards a cure. Teresa is taking part in Cardiff Memory Walk and asking for supporters to follow suit by going to
memorywalk.org.uk. “I was aware of this terrible illness when my father-in-law was diagnosed - then after his passing my mother, who is my best- friend, was diagnosed with dementia and is struggling day to day
with dementia. It’s very hard watching her deterioration. “I’m doing this walk in the hope that in the future Alzheimer’s Society will fi nd a cure so that other families won’t have to go through what we are going through now.” A total of 1,684 supporters have already registered to take part in the Cardiff Memory Walk, which will be on Saturday 1 September. More than 45,000 people in Wales are living with dementia and last year’s event attended by over 4,000 people – raised more than £178k to fund research and provide support. Sue Phelps, Alzheimer’s Society Cymru Country Director, said: “Dementia is now the UK’s biggest killer, with someone developing it every three minutes. “We’re calling on family, friends and teams from across Wales to unite against dementia this autumn. Walk with us at Cardiff Memory Walk to help defeat dementia. “We are urging people to unite against dementia and register now at
memorywalk.org.uk”

IT’S in a bit of a sorry state at the moment but Gwent Girlguiding have designs on a ‘previously owned’ craft they’ve borrowed to enter this year’s Monmouth Raft Race. An advance party from Gwent Girlguiding homed in on the beached raft at St David’s Hospice Care’s depot in Cwmbran. Andrea Rodley, County Commissioner Gwent Girlguiding, from Magor, said: “It’s ideal. All the basics are there all we need is a bit of imagination and some spit and polish and we’ll be ready to get going. “Gwent Girlguiding have been involved
in various St David’s Hospice Care events in the past but this’ll be the fi rst time we’ve entered the Monmouth Raft Race. We were delighted to discover St David’s Hospice Care had one to loan for the day. It’s now up to us to make it as eye-catching and comfortable for our crew of eight who ARE ALL FROM Monmouthshire and Newport.” For full details about the Monmouth Raft Race please visit www.
