#VoteVoles and help Welsh wildlife charity’s work to save one of the UK’s rarest animals!

Wales 2017 Under Armour Series Squad

WALES have named a 36-man squad, including fi ve uncapped players for the 2017 Under Armour Series. Dragons pair Leon Brown and Elliot Dee, Ospreys fl anker and Olympic silver medallist Sam Cross and centre duo Owen Watkin (Ospreys) and Hadleigh Parkes (Scarlets) all feature. Led by captain Alun Wyn Jones the squad will face four consecutive autumn tests at Principality Stadium, kicking off against Australia on 11 November. With the two-year countdown and preparations for the 2019 Rugby World Cup fully underway, the squad features a further six players who made their international bow this summer in the victories over Tonga and Samoa (Wyn Jones, Seb Davies, Adam Beard, Aled Davies, Owen Williams and Steffan Evans).

Gwent Wildlife Trust (GWT) is appealing for your help to save one of Britain’s most endangered mammals - the water vole.

The trust is asking people to #VoteVoles so they can win money from the Aviva Community Fund 2017. Until November 21, 2017, the charity needs votes from the general public to help them to secure up to £25,000 for their Saving The Wentloog Water Voles Project. GWT want to use the money to help water voles on the Wentloog Levels - a secretive landscape criss-crossed with drainage ditches, plants and animals - between Cardiff and Newport. Water voles are a native species and until the 1950s, they fl ourished in Wales. Sadly, numbers have been dramatically declining, as they were impacted by habitat loss and preyed on by a non-native species, the American mink. This combination has meant up to 90 per cent of the UK’s water vole population, have become extinct during the past few decades. In 2012, GWT successfully re-introduced water voles back onto their Magor Marsh nature reserve, on the Gwent Levels.

Normally the charity say they would expect water voles to travel naturally to colonise nearby areas. However, they believe the mouth of the River Usk could be preventing water voles moving across from either side of the Gwent Levels. And while GWT do not plan on using the Aviva funding to build a bridge, the cash would allow them to do vital survey and monitoring work with local people, to discover more about the Wentloog Levels and water vole populations. Nine 2017 British & Irish Lions (Ken Owens, Alun Wyn Jones, Justin Tipuric, Taulupe Faletau, Rhys Webb, Dan Biggar, Jonathan Davies, Leigh Halfpenny and Liam Williams) are named for the series which will see Wales take on Georgia, World Champions New Zealand and South Africa on successive Saturdays following the series opener against Australia. Experienced prop quartet Rob Evans, Nicky Smith, Tomas Francis and Samson Lee feature alongside Brown and Jones.

Ken Owens and Kristian Dacey join Dee as the hooking options with Jake Ball and Cory Hill named as second-rows along with Beard, Davies and Jones. Dan Lydiate, Josh Navidi and Aaron Shingler join Cross, Faletau and Tipuric as Wales’ back-row options.

Gareth Davies, Webb and Aled Davies feature as the three scrum-halves.

Rhys Patchell and Rhys Priestland are also named along with Biggar and Williams. Tyler Morgan joins the centre options alongside Davies, Parkes and Watkin. Hallam Amos and Alex Cuthbert will link up with Evans, Halfpenny and Williams as the back-three options. “I’m really excited about this squad as we kick off the two year countdown to the 2019 RWC,” said Wales Head Coach Warren Gatland. “We see this series as an opportunity to expose some players to the Test environment and continue to build our game as we look ahead to two years’ time. “This autumn is a lot different to 12 months ago, where the focus was all about rankings. We have selected fi ve uncapped players, there are a further six who made their debuts on the summer tour so it is a big opportunity to see all these players in this environment and I’m looking forward to seeing what they are able to do.
