Alzheimer’s Society Cymru has launched a fun and very Welsh tongue-twister challenge to help raise funds and awareness of dementia. The leading charity are asking people across Wales, and beyond, to unite with Alzheimer’s Society, join in our social media #LlanfairPGChallenge and donate just £3 to Alzheimer’s Society Cymru to help support people affected by dementia.

How you can get involved in the #LlanfairPGChallenge? The challenge is to film yourself pronouncing: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, nominate 3 people to do the same and then upload and share your post on social media and donate £3 to Alzheimer’s Society Cymru. You can donate by texting LFPG99 £3 to 700 70 or donate online at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ llanfairpg-challenge. Let Alzheimer’s Society Cymru know when you’ve completed the challenge by tagging Alzheimer’s Society Cymru on Facebook and tweeting us on @AlzSocCymru. Cheryl George, Alzheimer’s Society Cymru’s Community Fundraiser said: “This is a fun, light-hearted fundraising campaign, originating here in North Wales which we hope will spread right across Wales, the UK and even further! By taking a few minutes, donating £3 and attempting to get your tongue around Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, you can unite with Alzheimer’s Society and make a real difference for people affected by dementia.” Lots of well-known Welsh personalities and local dignitaries have already taken part in the #LlanfairPGChallenge, including: Geraint Thomas MBE, former World Champion and Olympic gold medal cyclist; Dani Rowe (three times World Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Welsh track cyclist); Welsh rugby players Sam Warburton, OBE, Hallam Amos, Ken Owens and Rhys Patchell; Capital Radio’s South Wales presenters Polly James and Matt Lissac; Aled Powys Williams (Welsh singer and actor) and Mirain Haf Roberts (singer/actress) and actor Steve Spiers. The local community in Llanfairpwll has led by example with local Llanfairpwll Community Council Chairman Cllr Alun Mummery teaching everyone how to pronounce the place name correctly in his video. Local Welsh Assembly Member, Rhun ap Iorwerth and the Marquess of Anglesey have taken part too. The funds raised from this campaign will help Alzheimer’s Society Cymru continue to provide support, advice and information to the 45,000 people living with dementia in Wales. Supporting the #LlanfairPGChallenge will help the charity influence change for people affected by dementia, through its campaigning, Dementia Friends and Dementia Friendly Community initiatives. We fund vital research into understanding the causes of dementia, improving diagnosis, finding better treatments, and ultimately searching for a cure.
