When you are organising a wedding you will be almost overwhelmed at the number of matters to be attended to. What with guest lists, gift lists, the ceremony, reception, transport, photography and clothes, it’s all too easy to overlook the less obvious though equally important things like the rings, stationery, cake, fl owers and decorations. And small and seemingly unimportant as these may appear in the general mayhem, they are all important to the event. Whoever heard of a wedding without most of those?
Sp ing Bride
The rings are obviously selected early on in the arrangements. Bride and groom will decide whether to buy new or antique rings or whether to have a matching set for them both, made especially. Most jewellers will be able to help and advise. There are other considerations however. There are the groom’s gifts to the bridesmaids - usually silver bracelets or neck chains. His gift to the best man, a pair of cuffl inks is always acceptable. He may also wish to resurrect that ancient tradition of presenting his bride with a ‘morning gift’, usually a ring or some other piece
of jewellery which he will present to her at their fi rst breakfast together as a married couple. Wedding stationery is important almost from the start of the arrangements. There are announcements to make, invitations to issue, ‘Thank You’ notes to send after gifts arrive. Order of Service or ceremonial sheets are usual so everyone knows what’s going on and what will happen next, plus place setting cards for the reception not to mention place mats and serviettes. A wedding diary is another essential. Without it, keeping track of all the arrangements can be very diffi cult. All this stationery can be ordered to match from the local printer or stationery shop. It’s worth getting the order in early though, to avoid disappointment. Decorations for the church or wedding venue and reception have become more fl amboyant over the years. Flowers are still important of course, but so are balloons and streamers. Flowers usually decorate the reception and the ceremony venue. They may be supplied by the caterers but many families like to add their own touches. They may for example, wish to
echo the bride’s bouquet. They may wish to have a fl ower girl preceding the bride up the aisle, scattering fl owers or petals as she goes. Some clergymen allow this and some don’t, so always establish this before purchasing the blooms. By the same token some clergymen allow the church to be decorated according to the bride’s wishes and some don’t. Register Offi ces are usually already decorated and special, certifi ed wedding venues will often supply extra fl owers on request. The reception tables always benefi t from fl ower arrangements. Sometimes the blooms are arranged in dozens of individual bouquets which guests are invited to take away at the end as souvenirs. These can of course be silk fl owers in which case the souvenirs will be very long lasting indeed. The bridal bouquets will have been ordered way back when the gowns were chosen. It’s as well to see the fl orist early as he or she will know what fl owers will be in season at the time of the wedding. And don’t forget buttonholes and corsages for guests, those special bouquets for the bride and groom’s

mothers, and their grandmothers if they are still around.
Other decorations like helium fi lled balloons and streamers can be bought from any party shop, there’s bound to be one in your locality. They come in all colours as well as gold and silver and can be printed with the names of the happy pair.
Finally there is the cake to consider. Most bakers have pattern books from
which to choose the style. It is as well to order the cake well in advance and arrange for it to be delivered to the reception venue. A large cake, even a single tier, is no easy matter to transport. Best give the risk to the baker. Don’t forget to order a stand. They are not supplied automatically and cakes always look better properly displayed. If the cake is to be made by a gifted
friend or relative, a stand will still be necessary. Many bakers and some hardware stores operate a hiring service, so it may not be necessary to buy one.
And don’t forget that special knife with which to make the ceremonial fi rst cut. No ordinary knife will do, and it will make yet another beautiful souvenir of the day for bride and groom to cherish.
