Music and singing helps evoke memories
Come and Sing project which ran for five weeks, receiving great feedback from patients, families and staff on the benefits of the sessions. The Come and Sing project will now continue running on a weekly basis on Ward C7 until Easter, supported by Cardiff & Vale Health Charity under the Heath Boards Music To Our Ears programme. WNO’s vocal animateur Kate Woolveridge and repetiteur Nicola Rose inspired patients, families and nursing staff to come and sing with us, with the pilot creating a joyful atmosphere and sharing relationships between staff, patients and families on the ward. Patients on the ward are aged between 70 – 90 years old they not only enjoyed listening to solo items but also actively joined in with the music, vocally and physically. The sessions were run during afternoon visiting hours so that friends and family could get involved too and sessions were so well received that patient’s would do warm ups and practices during the morning of a session.

The positive impact that the first five weeks of the WNO’s Come and Sing project has created has proven what a worthwhile and much needed regular activity this is for patients, relatives and staff members alike.

Missed out on the SOLD-OUT ABP Newport Marathon? You can still run for Cancer Research Wales!
If you missed out on the chance to enter the sold-out ABP Newport Marathon taking place at the end of April, all is not lost. Cancer Research Wales still have free spaces available, so you can dust the snow off your trainers and start making paces, all in the name of a good cause! The ABP Newport Marathon and 10K run is being held for the first time this year, on Sunday 29th April and the Welsh cancer charity still has spaces available for runners. The course is one of the UK’s flattest and fastest race routes and promises to offer a brand-new running experience to the 6000 runners who will descend upon Newport for the race. Runners will start and finish at Newport’s revamped city centre and riverfront, after racing through medieval Redwick, whizzing past coastal wildlife at Whitson and Goldcliffe, and treading past the iconic Transporter Bridge. Cancer Research Wales Fundraising Manager, Katie Killoran said: “The ABP Newport Marathon may be sold out, but that doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on running an extremely exciting and picturesque route for Newport’s first marathon. We still have places available and are currently looking for keen runners to join us on the big day and to raise as much money as possible to help us in the fight against cancer. “Entry is free, and all funds raised will go directly to support ground-breaking research taking place right here in Wales. We invite you to sign up and start fundraising today to run the many miles that will make a world of difference for Cancer Research Wales.” After signing up, you will receive a fundraising pack and a free running vest. Marathon runners need to raise a minimum of £250 and 10K race runners must raise at least £150 for the charity. For more information on the marathon, please visit: http://

St John Cymru vehicles
St John Cymru needs your help to find 100 stories to celebrate ‘100 years of being there’ for the people of Wales. Formed on St David’s Day in 1918, the nation’s leading first aid charity was there to help wounded soldiers in World War 1. Over the decades, volunteers have supported Welsh communities through the lows, such as the Aberfan disaster, and through the highs of Wales’ Grand Slam wins. Julia Hobbs, Chief Executive for St John Cymru, said: “It’s an incredibly exciting year for us and I hope everyone will get behind our celebrations and share their stories with us. “We have set up a special website to capture people’s
memories of St John Cymru over the last 100 years and we can’t wait to find out how our volunteers have made a difference. “You only have to look at the tremendous efforts of our volunteers during the extreme snow conditions – getting patients and staff to and from hospital – to know we’re as relevant today as we were 100 years ago. “With the support of the people of Wales, we can make sure St John Cymru continues to be there.” The centenary celebrations will also tell the story of how St John Cymru volunteers helped to set up the 130th (St John) Field Ambulance during World War 1.
