How Hormones Affect Hair Before

and After Pregnancy I have met many pregnant or post natal women

who are experiencing changes to their hair, caused by the change in their hormones. These can be unexpected and leave you wondering how to manage your hair, so here are some tips about what to expect and what to do.

Blooming Marvellous - Most of us have heard of the term “bloom” during pregnancy, which refers to the way that hair grows faster and becomes thicker as a result of an increase in oestrogen and blood flow at around 20 weeks pregnant. Hair becomes more lustrous and much less than the usual amount falls out

Colouring Hair - One of the down sides to “blooming” is that with increasing growth speed, regrowth becomes more prominent. Highlighting hair can help to blend regrowth, meaning you need to colour less frequently. Alternatively an Ombre technique can be used to give the effect of darker roots blending through to lighter ends or Balayage to create soft, natural, highlights through the mid lengths and ends, while a darker colour is used at the root, meaning that regrowth is much less noticeable.

Dry Hair - Hair can also become dry and scalps become flaky as a result of hormonal changes. Avoid washing hair too frequently as this can strip the natural oils and when washing your hair, shampoos and conditioners containing coconut oil will hydrate the hair and scalp without being too heavy. Colouring and straightening hair can make hair drier so try to reduce straightening and avoid bleach when colouring. Your hair stylist will be able to advise you as to what the best options are for you and your hair during a colour consultation.

Post Natal Hair Loss - Post natal hair loss affects most women to a certain degree and usually starts around 4 months postpartum, continuing until around a year post partum. It’s caused by the drop in the same pregnancy hormone which had been causing hair to “bloom”.

Once this hormone level drops, the hair that wasn’t lost during pregnancy, now begins to fallout. It may seem alarming at first, but usually at around 12 months post partum you are back to your normal rhythm of hair growth and loss, and your hair should be back to how it was before pregnancy.

Oily Hair - Some women find that their hair becomes greasy during or after pregnancy. If this happens look at what shampoo you are using. Gentle cleansing or volumising shampoos will reduce the build up of oils and will be light on the hair, use this alongside a light conditioner for fine hair. Avoid using moisturizing or rich shampoos and conditioners or any containing oil.
